Updates to Website

You guys may notice a lot of changes around here in the next few days.  I’ve been in full VeteranCraft mode for about 18 hours a day for the last 2 days and possibly another day or so more like this. It’s all in an effort to make things happen that have been on the backburner for a long time.  To those who are gonna say

“What happened to the old site, I like it”

All I can say is the changes coming down the pike are going to benefit the server, and my two words for you are “Embrace Change”.

I’m open to constructive feedback from those qualified to give it.

The goal with this site is to:

  • Clean it up- give it a more professional clean look.
  • Make information easier to find for veterans as well as newbies.
  • Improve the functionality of our forums.
  • Improve our search engine optimization.
  • Begin promoting our server in a systematic way

To those of you who help out, I am grateful, and to those who have thought about it but just haven’t gotten around to it, I’ll make it very easy for you soon. Meanwhile, you can help by connecting with us on all the icons over there in our sidebar. Don’t just follow and subscribe, but if you can, make a comment every now and then, post a screenshot to our Facebook or Flickr, or Tweet a screenshot with @veterancraft, or drop a comment, screenshot, or SOMETHING on our MC thread (Click creeper face in the sidebar). All these things are easy simple and go a long way to promoting the server. Even pop on and say a comment on posts like this. Let people know you exist! :)

Changes You’ll Notice:

  • Information will start to be more frequent and updated on the site. The format this post you’re reading right now will be our ‘long form’ way of getting out server news, videos, contests, community stuff, etc.
  • Navigation has changed. All the pages are now accessible from a navigation bar at the top header. All the content you had before is still here, just use the nav bar and use the drop downs to find it. All the information pages have been moved from what used to be ‘Newbie Guide’ to simply ‘Vet Guide’.  You’ll see more be added in there soon too.
  • Forums will change. It might take some getting used to, but once you’re used to it, the new forums should be much more feature rich and better keep track of our content. As well as it should better index in search engines. Some old links might break, but for the most part, all the data will be imported into the new forum platform.

My 3 Pronged Approach to Info Sharing with the Community:

  1. Short Instant Updates – (Twitter) – If you have Twitter, follow us, if you don’t it’s 2012, get it, come back here and follow us. But even if you don’t want to follow us, right on our home page you’ll now see our live Twitter stream, which will have the latest updates.
  2. Interactive Forum Participation – (Forums) – Our forums are where ongoing discussions about all things in the server go. The new forum software will allow you to subscribe to threads of your choice, get email notifications of reply and more. This will help you keep up to date on what you most care about here.
  3. Long Form News Posts – (This) – These posts will be the most important of the forum discussions to be entered in long form blog post fashion just like this. The goal is to have new content much more frequently. A few of you already expressed interest in writing for us, and I’ll soon be getting that together for you once the site is done with all the changes.

I’ve liked what you’ve done to the site. It looks a bit more professional now. Not trying to say it wasn’t before, but now everything looks much cleaner. There is one thing I want to point out though, but it might just be me, I’m not sure. When you’re in the home page and you go to the Vet Guide drop down list, it’s obstructed by the video. It’s not a major issue but seemed like it was worth pointing out.

Thanks for the feedback squi. What browser do you use? I used firefox and at least on my computer it didn’t impede the dropdown. But either way, I’ve removed the video for now. Once we get the video professionally recorded, I’ll re-embed it and have my coder fix the iframe overlay issue.

Currently using google chrome but I was getting the same issue when i switched to IE.

Love the new design! Very well done.

Something else that’s worth a mention. I’m not sure if you’re using cascading style sheets, individual html tags, or what – but the formatting in the “Let’s Connect” portion us causing the image links to have an underline when you mouse over them.

I would also suggest you look into changing the header colouring so that the current page tab is a different colour from the mouse over tab. Well, not a different colour but a different shade of that colour or something along those lines.

Lastly, the Upgrades page might needs a bit of formatting to bring it into line with the new colour scheme and cleaner design. There is no outline around the Knight’s box where you enter your IGN, and the table cell that the Bishop’s “Buy Now” button sits in looks like it has some cell padding issues? I’m not entirely sure, it’s been ages since I’ve done anything with web design. (Literally about six years!).

I’m loving the new look, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out as VeteranCraft expands and grows.

About the underline- Thanks for pointing that out. Once I complete forum migration, all the little CSS issues like on the Upgrades page as well as the underline in the let’s connect box will get fixed by my coder. Keep pointing little issues like that out to me please so I can pass them all at once to my coder. He’s really good and will fix those issues, but I save money when sending it all at once. As far as the mouse over for the page tabs, what browser are you using? Cause when I currently hover over them, they turn light blue, then stay that way if I click on them. Are you seeing something different?

Looking really good, Meat. I’ll let you know if I notice any issues.

That’s what I mean, when you’re on the Upgrades page then the Upgrades tab is light blue. This means that when you’re on the Upgrades page and mouse over the Vote tab, you have two tabs that are light blue. I don’t know… maybe I’m just being weird, but I think it looks strange…

I would suggest having the tab of the page you’re currently on a slightly darker shade of the blue, for aesthetics.

I see what you mean. Now I have to explain clearly to my coder what I’m looking for. How about instead of hover over making the tab blue, it just changes the color of the text to blue?

  6. Emulated May 24, 2012 at 5:38 pm #

Well, if the hover makes the text blue and not the cell it wouldn’t match the drop down menu.

    • meatbawllz May 25, 2012 at 8:55 am #

Good point. So I’ll make the selected tab turn light grey.

You don’t have the servers address on the home page. At least, not that I can see.

Good call. We’re eventually going to have a server status widget that will show that but for the time being, I’ve put it above the Twitter feed.
