It’s been an issue since the beginning. You and your friend have a massive project you want to build (that in reality could take years), and your first step is to excavate an ungodly amount of land. Months go by, you finally got the land flattened, but you’re now either bored with it, moved on to another project, banned, quit the server, or quite Minecraft altogether. Now, you’ve left our planet with scars like these:
Not only do you leave the landscape raped in your wake, you now have selfishly and douchefully left the areas behind that others can’t build on because it would be griefing. This has happened COUNTLESS times, and it’s finally time to make it official.
The New Rule:
Players may not ‘terraform’, flatten, and/or decimate large areas of land to make room for a large building. You may only flatten land 40×40 or less (at a time). The alternatives are: Buy the land (if you res it, you own it, go for it); Flatten a 40×40 area, build, flatten another 40×40, build, repeat. Staff have discretion when determining when an excavation project goes too far. This rule will be implemented and enforced from 3/27/2014 and forward.
You know we hate making things more complicated by adding more rules, but our aging map can’t take the abuse any longer and we will take any steps needed to make everyone’s player experience better.

Question: If the person has left the server, why would it be griefing if someone else then used the area (after confirmation it is abandoned)?
If it’s something approved then it wouldn’t be griefing. this is referring to the general rule of not building near other people’s stuff, and how some people perceive flattened land as ‘stuff’.
In their ‘defense’, the third area was terraformed by a banned user. But I really like this rule.
Hm, that reminds me, I still got a project idea or two in mind that I should find abandoned terraformed areas for to implement.
Being banned is one of the reasons mentioned in the post. Just because someone breaks some other rule, gets banned, and ends up leaving hell on earth behind actually helps the case for this rule.
