How We Are Handling 1.8 at VeteranCraft

The 1.8 update is just around the corner, and we’ve been planning our strategy behind the scenes for weeks.  We’ve landed on a plan that I believe compromises in a way that most people will be on board.  Bookmark this page if you ever have a question about how we’re going to handle the update, and point people here if they ask.

New Map

We will be rendering a new map with all the goodies 1.8 has to offer.  There will be a large city at spawn that will showcase our server’s best builders.  This is already being planned out.  At spawn, there will be portals between the new map, the old map.  There will also be a portal to the Nether.  (See Nether details below)

Old Map

We’ve all invested tons of time in building the world into what it is now, and it would be pretty hard to just wipe the map right away.  So we’re going to keep the world map open until Minecraft’s retail launch (expected November).  So your stuff is safe for a couple months.

Moving Transition Time

During these 2 months, it is highly recommended that you move your valuables to the new world and deconstruct any buildings that you don’t want to lose the materials on. You can move them at your own pace, you have plenty of time.

When the 1.8 update comes out, your mcMMO stats, iConomy balance, and inventories will remain the same.  Don’t worry about any of those being lost.

Residence Refunds

Any residence that you purchased in the old map will be purchased back by the server at a price of 0.07 shillings per block.  If you were given a residence or something, you will not be refunded.  Only if you actually paid for the residence.

How to get your residence refund:

  1. Clear out anything you don’t want to be griefed, move it to your new home in the new map
  2. Once you don’t care what is in your res, and you’re ready to abandon it, stand in it, type /res info and take a screenshot like this:

You can see this residence is 83,328 blocks, multiplied by 0.07 is 5,832.96.  So your refund for this res would be $5,832.96.
  3. Contact an admin, have them confirm your res size and refund, then remove your old residence.
  4. Post your request for a residence refund, along with the screenshot in this forum.
  5. You will be refunded once your residence has been confirmed to be removed.

Moving Buildings to the New Map

Before we go into this section, keep in mind most servers are not offering any transition at all, and are simply wiping their old maps.  Here’s how we’re going to handle moving buildings to the new map via a worldedit cut/paste process:

Financial Donors:

If you’ve ever contributed to VeteranCraft, you’ll be entitled to moving 1 structure that is no larger than 100 wide x 100 long. This will be free of charge, and you are welcome to use it or not use it.

Everyone Else:

If you have a structure you just can’t live without, you can pay §0.20 (Shilling) per block to transport 1 cuboid up to 50 x 50 x 50 in size.  Yes, it’s expensive, because it should be.  We don’t want to be moving all our buildings over, not to mention it takes manual time, effort and server resources to do this.

Technical Stuff

When the official 1.8 update is released, it will take some time before our server is ready to update.  What has to happen for us to carry through the update? A stable version of 1.8 must be released, along with a stable update of Bukkit. Once these take place, our hard working technician, frelling, will update our clone (test) server, and begin updating plugins and testing everything.  Once it is good to go on the clone server, we will announce an update here, and have a full update.

Frelling has been working really hard getting our tech-end in order.  All changes are being documented, tested and put through the wringer before we implement them. He has also been working to get iConomy and other plugins into our mySQL database.  In a nutshell, this will help take some of the CPU and RAM load off the actual server gameplay, and move it to a separate machine which will make things run smoother, with less lag and more stable. Frelling has put together a strategy for VeteranCraft that is more advanced and well thought out than 99% of the servers out there.

Changes to the Server

Nether to be Added

We will be adding the Nether when the 1.8 update comes out at VeteranCraft.  For the time being, no portals will be built by players as it would interfere with the world border, but there will be portals put in by staff.  The Nether will be a PVP & griefing allowed world! Frelling is working on a permissions configuration that would level the playing field here.  Meaning nobody would have God mode or jumpto or any other commands other than the standard, so it is a fair place to PVP.

VirtualShop to be Removed

Due to its many exploitable features, we are removing VirtualShop as our shop plugin.  We will replace this with a local based shop that requires players to travel to a location to buy.  This will encourage urbanization, and give players more of a multi-player feel.  The exact plugin we will use will be announced later.  We’re testing different ones now.

/ptp, /res tp & /spawn Commands to be Removed

In an effort to further encourage a multi-player experience, and to encourage urbanization, we decided there are too many ways to beam ourselves around for a survival server.  The only teleporting that will remain will be /home.  We hope people will be more interested in building close to each other, or building towns, roads and rails between each other because of this.  We are looking at adding a porting plugin that will be on a schedule, such as a boat that leaves every 10 minutes, and portals you far away.  This is still in the testing and research phase.  Donor perk abilities will remain the same.

We are excited and look forward to seeing you all in game!

Nice detailed guide. =) I just have 1 question and 1 comment.

Q: Will Residence be disabled in the Nether?

C: To all wondering, Pacifica will remain Ressed for 1 month after release. After that I’ll remove the residence.

Yes, res will be enabled in the Nether, and be the only way to protect against the turmoil outside :)

Awesome!! Thanks for putting this all together.

Will the gold exchange still happen or was that a function of VS?

    • meatbawllz September 13, 2011 at 4:14 pm #

The current gold exchange will be removed, however, frelling has on his list of things to do, to look into customizing a plugin that will tie the real price of gold to ingots, and having it as a separate exchange system.

It would be cool if we had this as a location based exchange, so you’d have to travel to the gold exchange building to trade.

Interesting what’s going to happen with the Nether, but how are you supposed to safely mine Glowstone if everyone is out to kill you?

    • meatbawllz September 17, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

Don’t go without armor and weapons. Enjoy the challenge, and if you kill someone, take their glowstone! :)
