If that's the kind of names you're going to use, I am sooooo going to call dibs on naming those areas since I first discovered them. -_-

The names in that image weren't even supposed to be there because they're not placed correctly. I was more just showing where the districts are. Sorry about that, it'll be fixed in the final version.

I'll name stuff whatever you want guys, but I'm always going to side with the admins and veterans if it comes down to disagreements.

I agree completely that the staff and longer-term members should have veto powers over naming.  That makes absolute sense, and I think mentioned it in the OP.

As far as areas in and around Highmoor, I am leaning towards using names from the same story that the name Xhoirho came from.  In that manner, I hearby name the teal district to the east of Highmoor to be known as The Sh'oal Forest, if that sounds alright to everone.  In the story, Sh'oal was an early form of the god of Life, essentially a forest god.

I think it would be best to have major cities in a region name that region with agreement of others to fit a role play/fantasy aspect

Today I worked a lot on districts and divisions and stuff like that, which when finished will be grand but for now doesn't warrant a big post to update.

I've been having issues deciding how to indicate the settlements on the maps. I've fiddled with a few different ways (actual mapping of the cities, sketching iconic buildings, highlighting areas and names, etc) and I just tried a different method that people might actually like, but I'd like some opinions.

The basic idea came from Game of Thrones and their banners. So you pick some settlement colors, an emblem of some sort, and a motto, and bam, you've got a banner. Examples below.

Then I take that emblem, put it on a coin of sorts, and place it on a map. The example is again below. Let me know what you guys think.

ALL OF THE BANNERS ARE QUICK EXAMPLES - NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CITIES THEY ARE BASED ON. THEY CAN BE CHANGED, OBVIOUSLY.

I dunno, you caught Vetra's essence quite nicely there. =P

I do like the order-part but maybe something with a ship instead, since that's what I intend to have a whole fleet of?

The idea is awesome btw. :)

First off, holy crap, this is a super active thread, which is awesome. I wish I would have known it existed but being out of town for some reason it was bumped off my 'unread posts' list...

@Pherian! You rock! We missed you! I can't believe these maps and the other design stuff, it's awesome, and I wish I could pay you or something.I'm glad you're back and I hope all your stuff is intact at Baywalk.

One thing about the header you put together, I think the "C" in VeteranCraft needs to be capitalized or largeized.

Also, for reference, the typeface used in the logo is "P22 Operina Fiore" if you need me to I can upload it to FTP.

@TSWG: I sent you the photoshop file of the logo, did you get it? I was about to purchase an animated video bumper but since you chimed in, I'd much rather have that be something done by a member of the community so shoot me your ideas and whether or not you think you'll be able to.

@Light: Great ideas, and about the Wiki, the original goal, as frelling said, was to have a lot more contributors, contributing articles about different cities, etc, and Dal, I like the idea of lore, it adds to the roleplaying aspect. I am sure frelling would agree that I would trust dalferes and LightWarriorK with wiki permissions to add or contribute content. It all helps. Adding more content helps the site and helps with SEO, along with helps enrich player's experience playing here, and giving them more information and thus keeping them better informed.

Another thing we want to do, and are working on via @brian, is testing out a new layer for Dynmap that will add important locations to placemarkers for Vetropolis, ie: The noob spawn, portal room, harbor, shops, etc. I'll have to see where we're at with that but its our initial 'expansion' of the features of Dynmap. In the future, we might add a layer for cities, landmarks, etc. Of course they would have to be either purchased or meet some kind of requirements.

The idea of the Embassies was and is also a method to give new players a place to go to explore what cities have to offer, which ones to settle, etc. I encourage anyone who has not visited the embassies to do so, and any unfinished embassies to finish your stinking embassies as per the requirements :)

I'm not sure about TikiWiki, as I've never heard of it or used it, but MediaWiki does have a few things left to be desired, when it comes to permissions. But its freaking fantastic with SEO and with general user usage, as everyone has used wikipedia, therefore can figure out how to use our wiki, but it is something to consider. Is Tiki functionally the same as a MW from the UX perspective? I have seen the tech wiki but not sure if that's the only design/theme available or default layout or what.

Overall, I'm glad everyone is on board with the overall vision of providing a richer community experience and something you couldn't get at any other server.

Glad to help, Meat. You run a good server and populate it with good mods, so my gratitude to you and your staff for providing a pleasant place to play.

The header I've fixed. Thanks for the heads-up.

I'll look for the font you cited online and if I can't find it I'll get back with you.

Don't worry about payment or anything. Maybe when I finish the map I could get a title that says Cartographer or something like that. But no shillings or real money, please. I like being the guy who works in cobble and wood. :)

If there's anything else graphical I can help with, as long as its fun, I'll be happy to help! :)

Okay, finally finished the districts for every region and named them. I haven't named waterways and rivers and mountains and stuff, because... well, that's crazy talk right now. :)

That being said, here's what I've got done.

total-landmass-example-copy.jpgImage Enlarger

Here's a list of what I've got at the moment. Things are starting to get ready for the wiki now. We're nearly there I think, with the exception of changing the names of things.

Full Map Plain

Full Map with Regions

Full Map with Districts

Regional Maps with Banner Cities

Regional Maps with Districts

What I would like to do:

Full Map with Portal Ship Routes (still don't have that mapped out yet)

Regional Maps with Transportation Routes (roads and portal ships)

Eventually? I think it'd be nice to have each District have its own Wiki Page and Lore. I'd even love to see some development of the land according to the history of the world (for instance: build ruins where an old fort used to watch over the cliff. Don't worry about ressing it, because its deliberately ruins. Stuff like that)

So what's next?

Amazing, Pherian, and wonderful!  [insert many more praise words here!]

I agree about the Wiki Pages for the Districts.  Some may be able to be bundled, I'm sure, like I could easily bundle The Xhoirhian Highlands, The Sh'oal Forest, and possibly The Wastes (I might have a name for that one, too....) into a single wiki page (the whole area called Xhohiro), since they're unpopulated currently.

Was this all done in Photoshop?  If so, would you be able to set up a basic map of district(s) and share the .psd file?  That way, those of us who can would be able to take the menial District updating (and minor feature naming) off of your hands.

If you want to test it, I'd be happy to, although I won't be able to get to my Photoshop computer until Monday.

Thanks again!

Got to love how I'm partially responsible for 3 of the names, as well as that you named the Southern Continent after me! ^_^

Yes, it's all done in Photoshop. When I break the world down into districts, I'll happily hand over the .psds to people who request them. I'm not going to break everything down like that unless its needed, however, because of how much work it would be for a minimum of gain (most of the world isn't inhabited and doesn't require any sort of work yet).

That being said, sometime Thursday I should be back on the computer with the main file and get you the districts around your area for you to play with. Not a problem.

Oka, glad you like. You've been a big supporter since I joined, you deserve it.

I don't see an issue with letting a few trusted individuals have authoring rights on our current MediaWiki.

From my perspective its all about integration and administration. So I'm not about to go jump out and suggest we use another wiki solution that is only going to bring about another independent set of configurations, access control lists, etc. For the interim, I believe the best approach would would be to have two wikis - the current one for housing content that is managed by a few trusted individuals and a second one that is completely open. The latter would offer the ability for any player to create and edit content. I'd rather see this be restricted to registered members only but that's a something to do when the bigger fish have been fry. If we do take this approach there is the likely possibility that we'll get some griefing on the wiki also. Fortunately, its fairly easy to rollback to previous versions. But for this to be a possibility we would need one or two individuals to assume the responsibility of patrolling the wiki and monitoring page changes.

Pulled that out of their style sheet. That's the color code Ryan is asking for. Hope it helps.
