As for the map, perhaps ask the techies to fully render Vetronia before a full map is made?

That's a good suggestion!  It would certainly help some things.  I don't know how easy it would be, though.  It's not like they haven't been rendered, it just seems that LiveMap never updated for those chunks.  I had a black spot right next to Highmoor until I updated the chunk with a change.  So maybe we could do some sort of concerted effort to make a single block change (leaf, dirt, etc.) in each of the blacked out chunks to get them to show up?

I might run a map through Photoshop as well, not in competition with Pherian, just to see what I can do.Smile

There's no such thing as competition when everyone's goal is to help the group. There's just a higher chance of something great coming out! So please feel free to play around with it.

What I'm doing right now is drawing the world out organically rather than just copying the world map and putting some filters and layers on it. I'd like it to look like its a general idea of the world, like an older atlas, rather than a pixelated print-out. I think there's definitely room and a need for both, but I'm doing it this way for now.

As for the banner, Ryan, you just want it to say VeteranCraft and have the logo? What's the banner for? Dimensions, etc. Thanks!

Okay, I did this thing. Sorry if it's too big, the screen I'm on it 30 inches wide and the actual image is over twice this size, and that's just the southern continent.

So you can see what I'm doing is generalizing the world. I'll put the names of places and hopefully (don't hold me to this) a nice  little sketch of an iconic part of that town/village/location. I figured with a world this size there'd be a few levels of maps: the whole world, each continent/region, then maybe down to districts or counties or lands or something. You guys can figure that out.

I'm designating deserts and thick forests with color differences. No other significant additions, but I think mountain ranges would be nice.vcmap-example.jpgImage Enlarger

That is extremely cool, Pherian!

Would each area be its own map, or could there be one of all Vetronia like this?  Even large scale, it would be very awesome.  Especially for those like me, who have access to a large-format printer so getting a physical map of Vetronia is possible.

I agree about the mountain ranges (mostly the Extreme Hills biomes).  Maybe some sort of Embossing?  I don't know the best way to identify them, unless you do it by biome.  Otherwise it would just be guesswork.

Would we be able to get the transportation systems on the map, somehow?  The most important would be marking where the portal ships are (sylish X?), but also minecart transitlines and any inter-city highways (like the one stretching from Lakeshore past Dustlandia).  It might also work to change the color of the landmarks so they kind of stand out.  IMHO, this map needs to not just look nice, but serve a purpose that the LiveMap doesn't: helping people get around and know where they are and what is near them.

I suppose we need to start naming things, then?  As you go through it, Pherian, if you're able to just mark what needs to be named, everyone can contribute a list for you, I'm sure.  But I would think that for the sake of the map style/cleanliness/readability, there should be some sort of threshold as to what should be included on the map.  Definitely not every single Residence, but certainly every city and major construction.  Major water bodies and large islands, yes, but not every little pond or stream.

Thanks!

I'm going to do a huge map of all of Vetronia like this, and then have several zoomed in versions for different continents and regions and whatnot. I figured we could put the portal ships on the big map, and as you select a specific region you get to see smaller towns and other transit lines.

I could make the hills/mountains show up, but finding them on the map would be a pain for me. I'd much rather designate zones instead of individual large hills, so if someone can somehow track down those regions for me that'd be awesome.

As I get the different areas done, I'll post them with identifiers where I see construction areas. If people can fill in those blacks, I'll name them and start getting some alpha copies of the map done.

Drawing this is taking a while though. If I had to guess I'd say I'm 40% done with the base land outline, then i still have to do forests and deserts. THEN comes the identifying, naming and whatnot. So it'll be a bit.

Anyway, it's fun to do! So that's a plus! Any other ideas let me know!

Looks good, pherian. And the banner would need to be about 500x100 or 500x200 like the words and yeah, just somegthing fairly simple with the logo (it's going at the top of our advertisement pages).

Take your time! I don't think it's any rush, and it's better to look good than look like something from MS Paint.Wink

There are definitely some zones out there that I can help track down.  For instance, http://play.veterancraft.net:2.....9902631057.  This is the range that Highmoor is in, and you can see there is a really good string of Extreme Hill biomes stretching over nearly a 1000x1000 area.

I can try and identify them for you, and let you determine how and to what extent to show them.

We could possibly name the very good looking or huge mountains as well. I'll talk to you ingame, light, about naming (and dal).

Yeah, certain mountains might qualify, certainly.  They might just be a simple /\ graphic on the map, whereas a range would get /\/\/\/\/\. I'm going to quickly use the LiveMap and MS Paint to mark the ranges and mountains I see.

Sounds good everyone. I'll get that banner done when I get home. Can't remember the font I used at the house, and I want them to be cohesive.

Back to work on the map!

Well, here's my quick look at the mountains.  The ranges are in red, the standalone mountains are in green.

I wish Notch had been more consistent with his terrain generator.  They're very random and spread out.  Still, there are 4-5 good-sized ranges in the middle of the map, and bunch of smaller ones.  The standalones are very random.

My suggestion with naming them is to get the opinions of those who have built in the area.  Give them a chance, like explorers do, to name the things they've found.  But then let the staff decide, so a series of noble map names isn't ruined by Poopyfuperdoodle Mountain.

That's perfect Light! I can just superimpose it on my map (everything is to scale) and put them there mountains in their places!

As far as naming, I think that's a fine idea. What I'll do is come up with a name for everything for the map. People change what they want. That way if no one gives a doo-doo about something, it'll already have a generic name created by me, and the things they do care about we can rename on the fly.

About 50% done with base layer. Dudes, this world be big. As in, "yo momma so fat" big. Like, Okarim's bank-account-sized big. :)

OK, I'm done for the day. Tonight is too busy to count on anything getting done (just found out we're taking the father-in-law out to dinner to celebrate something or other). Here's where I'm at right now. I broke most of the world into regions (they all look the same right now, but they are separate) designated temporarily by they relationship to a central compass (as in northwest, north, northeast, etc). The only area I'm missing right now is the spawn area and the islands around it, namely the Eastern Region.

Oh yeah, this is about 20% of the size of the main map.

I'll get back to work on it sometime tomorrow!vc-whole-map-example.jpgImage Enlarger

That does look incredible, Pherian!

And you know, looking at the map of the Southern Continent and the rest of it side-by-side, I almost like the rest more.  It's less....patchy.  The need to show the forests and deserts I don't argue with, but is there a way to make them less contrasting with the whole?  Just a thought, though.  Keep up the good work!

Sorry about the DP, I have more info:

I have been thinking about the structure of the wiki, particularly the Main page, the Table of Contents, and the Embassies and Cities Pages as it relates to the "Brochure" part of the idea.  Specifically, I was thinking about it not so much as a regular wiki, but as a public information site used in real life.  As an example, check out what I do: http://www.gpats.org.

Now, that site cost us $10k to develop, and host and maintain for a year, so naturally I'm not suggesting anything so fancy.  But there should be a way to achieve the same sort of result with the wiki.  Ryan and HB, I know you've been working on the wiki as well, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this (and if this needs to be broken out into a separate suggestion thread, that's fine):

  • The wiki should be moved out of the bottom of the Guides tab, and given its own tab in the site header.
  • The Main page should serve two main purposes: To capture interest and to guide the user.  Right now it serves mainly to inform, which can be done better on the sub-pages.

The Main Page could be laid out like this:

  • On the sidebar:
    • ToC box
    • Basic VeteranCraft stats (date established, # of worlds and size, # of cities, # of residents)
    • YouTube vid(s)
    • Picture slideshow
  • In the center:
    • VC logo
    • thumbnail links to Pherians map and the LiveMap
    • "Learn all about Vetronia!" - paragraph of basic information, and link to subpage:
      • Worlds Info (currently on Main page)
      • Transportation information (including a how-to on using the portal ships)
      • Embassies
      • Links to City Brochures
      • Pics and info on epic standalone world creations
    • "Play Minecraft the way it was meant to be played! And more!" - paragraph of info, link to subpage:
      • Server info and rules
      • Plugins
      • Links to Guides
    • "Have Fun!" - paragraph of info, link to subpage
      • Spleef
      • Arena
      • Hunger Games
      • etc.

Anyways, that's all I've got so far.  The idea is basically to tailor the wiki as a sales-pitch for the server at the same time that it provides all the information you need to know.  Ok, that's my deep thought that was rattling around in my head last night!  Thanks!
