"Welcome to Vetronia! See the sights! Make Minecraft memories that will last forever!"
I mentioned something like this in the chat soon after I first joined. I was going on a "tour" of the cities, and while the LiveMap really helped get me around, I didn't see everything. I had completely missed Kamemura on the trip, which was sad, because it's gorgeous. When I mentioned it, I rightly got a lot of , "no, exploring is better and more fun!" So I've been thinking since then, and seeing how most new people experience the server.
First, some thoughts.
My career IRL is as a City and Regional Planner, specifically right now as a Transportation Planner (hence probably why I'm building Highmoor roads-first). Planning, as a career, is focused on many aspects, but specifically one universal truth: Location, location location. With /tp, /spawn, /home, portal ships, and Redstone-powered transit lines, location becomes not as important. If it were, we would all be huddled on the shores of the mainland. As it is, we're very spread out.
For the most part, that's not a problem. As I said, location is mostly irrelevant. It doesn't matter that my mine is a world away in the Outer Reaches when I can instantly /home there. But what I've seen become a small issue, as an example, is that a LOT of people are crowding the area Avalon. Here is where location IS an issue: Avalon's portal ship is the closest to the Spawn. When new people ask, "where can I build?" we say, "take a portal ship." They take the first one, like the area, like Avalon, and decide to set up a structure.
[As an aside recommendation, I would suggest working out amongst the ship owners a rotation, and get meat or frell to move the ships, so the area that wants more traffic can be the first in line for it.]
So this sets up a few issues:
1) Vetronia is comprised of a very nice spawn and several well-established cities, but for the most part is very rural. There are little houses out of the way here and there, but even with the transportation infrastructure, it's pretty isolated.
2) New members get lost. I'll be honest, I looked at the LiveMap for about an hour, just soaking up the map, before I ever logged on to VC. Most users won't do that. They see Vetropolis, find out they can't build there, and then rely on members to get them somewhere. Most of the time it turns out well, yes. Sometimes it doesn't. The intrusion upon Avalon is the best example I can give, but going deeper into "Planning Theory," the problem is that despite the infrastructure and wayfinding, Vetronia isn't a very cohesive civilization. Each city is sort of like Hawaii: so far out of reach that it doesn't feel like a part of the U.S. Trying to get newer members to acclimate to that is difficult. I know it's beneficial to have a complicated setup to chase away the kiddies who wouldn't belong, but I wonder how many good players have left because it's not easily accessible. I'm not critiquing VC at all, just raising a question.
3) Exposure: Some people really want it. Others, not so much. I'll use the example of Scottland. Scottiefinn has been asking for residents like crazy, and that's alright, but I'm wondering if there would be a better way for him to advertise. But especially cities that do not have a portal ship set up yet, but would like the revenue from residents, getting newer players out to their areas are difficult.
All that to get to a suggestion, right? This is really one suggestion, which I'm going to suggest be on the wiki, but really would have two components:
1) A map. The community gets together in an effort to develop the Vetronia map into something you'd find in a store. The LiveMap is awesome, and fantastic for play, but its capabilities are very limited when it comes to providing more information. Labels, roads, geographic features, water bodies, possibly "political" boundaries, etc. For instance, what is the name for the name for the Bay to the west of the ocean, which feeds Highmoor? I'd like to give it one, but how does that information get distributed?
I recognize the need for exploration and discovery, but I'm not sure that Vetronia is the best place for that anymore. The OR and the new map coming with 1.3 can serve those functions. Vetronia is where we live, and where we want others to live, and if that's going to be the case, it needs to be known (at least the Residenced areas) And we need to take ownership of it. If there are areas that we want to keep wild, wouldn't that be best to note on a map? If someone wants to make a road, wouldn't it be best to build off existing roads? It really wouldn't take much but a screenshot of the LiveMap and someone with access to Photoshop. Properly executed, it could be updated on a regular basis, as well.
2) A Visitor's "Brochure." There are those who don't want their area publicized. There are also those (like me) who aren't ready for their area to be publicized. For everyone else, though, one of the great pleasures of Minecraft is being able to show off what you've made. From the pictures on the site and the server pages, there is SO much that hasn't been shown, even in the video. Perhaps the best way to get the information across is to allow everyone with a Res'd and portal ship'd city to qualify for a sub-page on the wiki, which they will be able to use to "pimp" their city. Tout the features, show pictures, describe the location, detail the residential opportunities, give shop menus, etc. Something more expansive and formal than the forum threads.
Anyways, that's just my idea. If you can tell I've been thinking about this, I hope you can tell how much I have enjoyed the last 3+ weeks on VC. I definitely plan on sticking around.

Its fairly old now as Pherian has vanished off somewhere but we were making a map http://www.veterancraft.net/fo.....craft-map/
I dont know if anyone artistic wants to carry it on but it was looking fairly good when it was last updated it needs to be expanded now and new cities need to be added but its a good start maybe we can use it for a base?

That is excellent! I don't know if I could do something quite that artistic, but I do have Photoshop CS5 and can take a shot at it. Thanks for the link.
Oh, I was going to apologize for the long post, but since the server is down, at least I provided good reading material.

I'm liking these ideas, light, and I'm really liking that you organized them so I could actually read it. We actually had a map like the one you were describing made by a member named Pherian many months ago. However, he is gone now and no one knows where he is. I think it's a great idea to get another one being made, and if we do have any professional artists in the community, then that can be arranged.
Point 2: That is an amazing idea! I have been thinking about how I should work on the wiki when getting deeper into my PR work, and that's a really nice idea to give it more use. I've been wanting the wiki to be the go-to place for getting information in a more extensive way, but this will help it get more attention as well. It could also have a sub-page for jobs that people can do if they are trying to get money, and lots of other stuff (there's a bunch of ideas floating around in my head now).
If you have any other ideas/would like to help me finalize some stuff about this then tell us, light.

Thanks Ryan!
Yeah, I'm not a professional artist, but I can use Photoshop pretty well. I can give it a shot and see what happens.
I didn't even think about it as a job-board! That's great! Yes, I will definitely let you know if I think of anything else, or if anything comes to mind while it's happening.:)

Hey!
I'm alive!
I still pay attention to you guys, just don't have the time currently to play as much as I used to. But I would definitely be willing to help with stuff where I can. VetCraft is the best server I've ever played on and I refuse to leave you all hanging.
So that being said, Ryan, if there's anything I can do to help, just say the word and I'll be there.
Glad to see you all still rocking and rolling. And happy anniversary! (PS, the server shares my birthday apparently.)

Hahahaha, yeah, I peruse the forums from time to time (and by that I mean a month here, a month there) and I like looking at all the things you guys are building, but like I said, I just don't have the time to mess around as much. Work is actual work lately and at home I've got one boy in potty-training and one about to cross the 1 year mark, so there's zero time to enjoy for myself.
That being said, I can swing things like photoshop and maps and stuff because they can somewhat look like work. Running around chopping down trees and building a town sadly does not fly well in the eyes of my boss.
So anyway, let me know if I can help! Good to talk to you guys again!

Holy crap, Pherian! It's great to see you again, and that's insane timing you had there, hehe. I'll be sure to contact you if we need you, and what's the best way to contact you anyway? Just a message on the forums?
Yeah man, just send me a message, that'll work.
Servers down? That sucks.

Sounds good! And yeah, FragNet has been having issues lately.
Edit: P.S. I'm still using that skin you made me, as you can see.

Dang.
This post is amazing. Light, your mind is amazing! And so cool that you got Pherian to post
I love the idea of a site where users can showcase their place. I know there's a forum to show off your stuff, but a wiki page is a bit better for that type of thing. I just worry about a bunch of pages showcasing cube-shaped dirt "houses" and the good stuff getting lost in the shuffle. Maybe there could be an "Editors Picks" section to make sure places like Squi's island gets noticed?
I like where this is going!

Luckily, I would be moderating and making sure that things like that wouldn't happen.

I'm so glad to see this is getting some traction!
And it's good to see you're still with us, Pherian! Your map is amazing, and I think it could look really fantastic updated and filled out.
And thanks, HB. I don't know about "amazing," but Planning is my bread and butter. Execution, too, but I don't get to do that a lot IRL. Hence why I love Minecraft.
I agree that there should be some definite moderation on the wiki to ensure no dirt houses made it in there. Specifically for security reasons, anything highlighted would instantly be a griefing target. So I would venture that anything on those "Brochure" pages would have to be Res'd. And I wouldn't discount certain stand-alone "wonders" of Vetronia getting a page, like your tree, HB, but for the most part I would suggest that if there is a page for it, it should be accessible to those who would like to see it, and thus would need access to a portal ship. That alone would keep out most of the dirt houses, I would hope.

Smart ideas, light.
@Pherian: I'll make up a little map with what needs some naming and editing for the new world and post it here so we can get some ideas. Also, is there any new styles we could try with the map? Don't get me wrong, the map is amazing, but you may have found some new things to do in the time you've been gone.

And this is why I love this server. Always coming up with ways to make it just that much better.
A few things that could be listed when a town has a wiki:
It's Coordinates
Print screen of the live map with a colored box around the area of the town
Town colors (I don't know if the town colors corresponds with the color on the portal boats)
The owner (possibly link to a separate wiki for the owner and other towns they created, so if they like one town they created, they may wanna check out the other towns)
List of people who donated/did work for the city during its building stage
Maybe a date when ground first broke?
Some type of lore as the body of the wiki
