Hey, I am an old guy but I am brand new around here.  I just did a search of the forum for Grief Prevention and couldn't find my answer.

I started my temporary camp in the side of a mountain.  When I did place a chest the GP stuff came up and I thought to myself "cool!".  So, I watched the GP video again and this let me know that "...as you dig down" GP would automatically extend under my claim.  This lead me to abandon my first claim and I climbed up the hill and made a claim using the golden shovel.

Judging by the warnings I am getting about digging and planting outside my claim - even though my X&Z coordinates are correct, I apparently am outside the 'protected' area.

I have a 1x2 ladder shaft down into my original cave and that area seems to be OK.  But digging any further down brings up the "Other Players could mess up your stuff" message/alert.

What am I doing wrong?    Is there a vertical limit to claims?   (Thanks for Listening)

Hey - one more:   Does it make sense for a newbie to simply claim his storage chests/rooms?

TIA

Without knowing more, chances are that you are building too far under your second claim. A claim does not protect downward to bedrock immediately. Instead it grows downward as you build downward. The operative work is "build." We're still a little new to the exact mechanics but if you want to extend the claim downward you can dig down and replace blocks above you. Those are the ones that will trigger the claim to extend downward. Rinse and repeat until you reached bedrock.

Keep in mind that GP is a grief prevention tool not a land management tool. In other words, it will not protect anything below unless it thinks its worth protecting.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their disinclination to do so. - D. Adams
