As some of you may have noticed, since 1.2 the Nether has been lagging horribly for many, resulting in lethal risks. I hear Sibbit doesn't have the problem, due to having a godly machine, many others have encountered the issue though. The problem appears to be related to lava-lighting calculations, that heavily drain the client. It only occurs when new chunks are loaded.
I found it (client-lighting) can be turned off in Spoutcraft, downside of that is that the many lighting bugs 1.2 introduced aren't fixed clientside, resulting in areas that are dark where they shouldn't be. Still, if you must venture into the Nether, Spoutcraft might be a good idea.
In the Minecraft Wiki this is in the bug list:
New lighting system severely drains FPS since 1.2. This problem persists in 1.2.5. Lighting changes in-game caused by lava, redstone lamps, redstone repeaters, and/or pistons cause heavy FPS drops and/or stuttering on low- to mid-range computers. This problem didn't exist in any version prior to 1.2. It looks as though there is now a lot of excess load on clients to calculate lighting changes, whereas pre 1.2 Minecraft forced the server to deal with lighting calculations. This essentially makes the nether and busy piston/redstone contraptions unplayable as the FPS lag is extreme.
