What mods can a person use in game? I am a new player to minecraft and even newer to mods. I'm not interested in mods that are going to find stuff for me or anything like that. But I am unable to look at the live map while I play because of having a laptop. It lags really bad when I try. So are there any type of mini map mods that can be used? I installed Zans minimap not knowing it wasn't allowed. It is removed now.

So maybe we could have a list of approved mods we can use. And if it's not on the list then you cant use it?

Personally, I use Optifine (almost a requirement to get any kind of decent framerate with my comp setup), Rei's Minimap (many people on the server use this one), Durability 101 (to see the durability of tools, weapons, etc in plain number form instead of green/yellow/red bar), and Better Sprinting (which lets you move the sprint function to button press/toggle instead of key double tap, and also lets you toggle sneak as well).

Basically, what they really care about is whether the mod you're using gives you an unfair advantage over other players. If it does (like mods that let you fly or walk through walls or other crap like that), then it's not allowed and will probably get you banned if they see you using it (and they see everything, trust me there). If it just does something like modify a chat or inventory gui, or do something else asthetic that won't give you an unfair advantage over others, then you should be fine using it.

If in doubt, you can always make a thread in the forums here and ask specifically whether any particular mod is allowed or not, and you'll get a definite answer that way...

Trip pretty much covered what I would have said. In addition, we cannot provide a list of approved mods as we're not in direct control of which features they add or modify. If we approved Rei's minimap, we would then be tasked with following their change log and running tests to see if features could be abused.

My only advice is to use common sense, and when in doubt - ask staff. We don't allow Zan's Minimap because it shows you where mobs are among other things, giving you an unfair advantage when looking for dungeons and Wither Skeletons.

Thanks for the explanation as to why Zans is prohibited. I didnt even think of using it like that. But that will help me avoid mods that are not allowed. I'm glad I asked you about it today in game! I can understand the dilemma with "approving" any mod. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions Trip. I saw Rei's minimap but didn't really look at it much since Zan's was suggested to me. I'll take a look at it though. I'll check out the others as well.
