Hello all. Just a heads up, I'm going to be out of commission for a week or two. My desktop computer is 9+ years old and continually crashes, and the non-gaming laptop I've been using has decided that it has had enough and died on me.
It will probably be a week or two before I will get a new one.
If any of you have recommendations for a "good" laptop (read: dedicated GPU card and decent RAM), and under $1,000, please let me know!
I'll be back online as soon as I can.

Thanks! So I've heard, so it's good to have confirmation. Right now there is a Dell with a Radeon R7 or a MSI with a GTX1050 that have my eye. Leaning towards the MSI, but it's $200 more.
I both love and hate getting new tech. I only want bleeding-edge, but can never afford it. 😛

Yeah, I did that for my desktop as long as I could. Changed out the graphics card 3 times, and the memory twice. But I think the motherboard is finally failing after 9 years.
Upgrading a laptop scares me....everything is so tighly packed in such a thin space, I'm afraid it's all going to explode like a peanut brittle snake if I open it! 😀

Generally, I build my own. However, when my nephew went off to college last year, I decided to buy a stock system, because lack of time. Here is a link to the latest incarnation of the ASUS G11CD with a 7th Gen i7-7700, 3.6 GHz (my nephew's is a 6th Gen i7-6700T, 3.6Hz), 1 TB HD, etc. Video card is a GeForce GTX 1050, capable of driving two displays. Its not the best, but its not the worst. This system will handle all your productivity and gaming needs lasting you another 9 years . However, if your heart is set on playing high-end games at 4K resolution, this system is capable (nephew plays WoW @ 4K) but wouldn't be my choice. Price: $999.99, available at NewEgg, Best Buy, other fine retailers, and from ASUS directly.

Thanks, frelling! Great to have that info. I'll be doing Fry's....I have a few hundred $ in gift cards there....by the grace of God one of their few SE locations is within spitting distance of my parents house, and I'll be there this weekend. My dead one is an Asus, and although it wasn't built for gaming, it did as well as it could, so it's on the approvred brand list.
In either any case, so long as there is a dedicated GPU, it's going to blow my previous platforms out of the water. My desktop had a 1GB GTX 7 series and only 4GB of RAM. 😛
As you told me, frelling, it's time to enter the 21st Century. For the last year, Aelfheim was slowed to digging/placing ONE block per second. Ready to speed that up.

Only thing left is to make your old laptop into a nice cutting board, or a spacer to keep a table from wobbling, or one of those things that tells you when you've pulled your car far enough into the garage because you feel your tire running over it. Get creative.

It's really quite amazing. They should have sent a poet.
Even with Conquest and SEUS Shaders, I still get between 5-10fps. Not enough to play like that, but plenty good for taking pictures. Without the Shaders, I'm getting around 30fps, and without the texture pack I'm at a solid 60fps most of the time. Color me satisfied. Now I can really start flying while building.
It's strange....I've NEVER played Minecraft without some form of local lag. 60fps is almost weird.

Is your new laptop properly switching from integrated to dedicated? I would think you would get better FPS with the specs, but in all those screenshots it shows the Intel HD graphics 630 running. Just curious, it always shows whatever I am using there, but maybe with Windows it shows the default card even when the dedicated one is being used.

I just threw a GTX 950 into my server, which has an older processor that is only clocked a bit higher, and my shaders on medium resulted in around 70-90 FPS. I'd definitely look into that, considering an older gen card is capable of doing that on and older computer. You should definitely be getting higher than 5-10 FPS. I hope you can figure it out.

I will look into it. The laptop is really "gaming on a budget," and even with the good specs could have some less-than-stellar infrastructure supporting it.
But there may be other settings I can play with, I've got Optifine turned up pretty high....
On a side note, I really wish there was a mod (or Optifine feature) that would keep distant chunks loaded (and inactive) on a server. I think VC is set at 12 chunks, but I would love to get some extreme range going for pics and views. It seems easy (to me) that the local game should be able to keep chunks beyond the server limit rendered but inactive and not updated. That way the view is limited to the local hardware, not the server's.
