This is just a heads up for those who do Redstone, 1.8 is going to add something with regard to pistons that will essentially be a game changer.

It will also make slimes an endangered species.

For those who can't comprehend what that gif is showing, it means that pistons will be able to move large structures of slime blocks, plus anything attached to those slime blocks.  This will make large gates and doors INFINITELY easier.

Be aware, though, staff will be on the lookout, as with any redstone contraption: if there is abuse (like building a giant shifting mass of slime blocks for no reason) it will be removed and you could face a ban.

I am also sure that Residence will need a "slime" flag so that slime blocks with pistons can't be used to grab and drag chests outside a Res to be stolen.

This is honestly the greatest thing I have seen added to Minecraft in a LONG time.Laugh

So..basically giant blocks of glue?  Is that what you are saying?  That will stick on all sides?

Pretty much! Smile

They're in the Snapshot released today, and reddit is already starting to see contraptions built.

Apparently this paves the way for vehicles. Surprised

Equally, or maybe even more impressively, is the fact that the slime blocks will retain their bounciness.  Thus, if you place a piston facing upwards and put a slime block on top of it, when it extends it will toss any entity upwards!  Including players!  The height of the throw seems to be just over 5 blocks.

This could be VERY important for future events. Laugh

Yep!  Right now most "elevators" seem to consist of timed springs or activated by tripwire.  There was one I saw that was more normal, but the redstone was much more complicated.

Right now most designs are in "proof of concept" phase.  With it still being in development, Mojang can still tweak how it interacts with everything, and can still make changes to how it works.  For instance, non-pushable blocks are much more important now, since they aren't affected.  Any door made with slime blocks will need to use blocks like obsidian or furances and the like adjacent to them, otherwise it will all move when the door does.

One change that NEEDS to be made, and I expect that it will, is that the blocks are too sticky.  For example, if you place a slime block on the ground, a piston can't push it because the dirt block attached to the slime block is held in place by the ground.  This needs to change so that blocks that can't be pushed because they're held in place by other blocks are simply ignored and not held.

I also expect that some sort of increase in the pushing limit for pistons will occur.  Right now the limit is 12 blocks.  I am hoping that it's increased so that piston power will increase with the number of pistons pushing.  So 2 pistons can push 24 blocks, 3 can push 36, and so on.

Check out sethbling's channel. He's been going crazy with the slime block, coming up with a bunch of cool little things.
