Here it was almost a week ago that I thought we'd be done with upgrades by now. Had this been a regular update that would have probably held true. Even so, we underestimated some of the technical issues that arose from a nearly 100% overhaul of our server environment. Configuration management implementation wasn't difficult, but required a lot of nit-picky details to be aligned before it worked as we wanted it to work. Our CM is the cat's meow! Granted this is only something that software engineers and/or analysts would get tickled pink about, but still this is going to make bug tracking, updates, and configuration changes a breeze. Everything is tracked and audited letting us quickly see how and what things changed over time without having to pour over dozens of emails, notes, forum posts, or whatever else we used to communicate such things in the past. Case in point, once all the tools were in place, it was a matter of minutes to deploy three servers - BungeCoord, The Hub, and Spigot19 on our production systems.

I had some hesitation about switching to PermissionEx as our de facto permissions system. It took a while to get confident in the manner in which it handled permission, particularly when it comes to inheritance from one group to the next. In the end (no pun intended) it was the right move and we're already considering contributing some feature enhancements to the project.

Okay, enough techy babble. I'm certain that is not what concerns our members the most.

Server Address

test19.veterancraft.net

The Hub

Upon initially logging in you will find yourself at The Hub. This is a concept launching point to other servers that we have been kicking around for some time. There isn't much to be done here other than going to a portal elsewhere. Eventually, there will be portals to Arda, The Trials, older worlds, and more. For now, one thing at a time.

You will also see a couple of new plugins in action here. For example, you should notice the large metal-embossed VeteranCraft logo at the center of the hub. While in-game map art isn't anything new, it tended to be fraught with problems due to bad plugin designs. We're in the process of updating one of such plugins to provide better management and capabilities such as banners and higher-resolution informational posters. This plugin will also support future in-game promotion of sponsors and other supporters of VeteranCraft.

As you head out to the Spigot portal don't expect to find our run-of-the-mill portal. We're using the Citizens plugin to spawn NPCs that can perform various functions. Initially, they are portal stewards. BTW, we are looking for a good skin for these guys that would further highlight their function. As you approach, the NPC will speak and inform you what options you have. We are strongly considering using these guys as ship/airship captains to ferry off players to their destinations in lieu of Multiverse portals. At this point that is only a consideration, not a given.

Spigot19

There isn't too much at the Spigot19 spawn location other than a few Kit Signs that will provide you with some essential stuff. Mind you, these items are for helping you along. The are not intended to provide you with all the latest and greatest items. That you will have to do yourself. As one of the signs says, if the items provided are not enough or not to your satisfaction, start punching some trees! Laugh

Spigot19 Plugins

The only user-specific plugins currently running on Spigot19 is Essentials. You will be able to set homes and use other utility commands. Sponsor permissions are active in this world and thus will provide access to other commands.

On the Drawing Board

The following plugins are currently in the process of being tested.

  • WorldEdit - e.g. compass, ascend, descend, etc.
  • Some economy plugin or if none can be found that is good enough, we'll continue with iConomy for the short-term.
  • XPVault
  • GriefPrevention

Member Testing

We strongly encourage members to try to break, err... test things provided that it is not malicious or directed against other players. When you find an issue that is related to our plugins, configuration, etc. please feel free to report them in this thread. We can't do anything about Minecraft bugs, though if they are very problematic, it would still be good to give them a mention here.

Player Inventories

Please make note of this!!! While we will try to keep it to a minimum, we may need to reset player data from time to time, which includes inventories. We strongly suggest to create a small hidden base and use the chests from the kits to squirrel away your stash, including anything on you (e.g. armor, weapons, inventory, etc.). Do this every time before you log off and you will be guaranteed that your items survive. For anyone reading this after the fact; you will find me unsympathetic. I've already got a pool going for who will be the first victims - frankly, it includes anyone that doesn't take the time to read threads that others took the time to write for them.

In Summary

I'm certain that I missed mentioning a few things and I know that most of our members will be more than willing to provide constructive criticism.

Just got a chance to login and again I wanted to say thank you!

Some initial notes and I'm sure I'll have more as I have time to test further:

  • Hub and assistances say "click me" but you have to right click. Suggest update to denote that.
  • How do I use the kits? /kit armor didn't work "You do not have access to that command". /armor either "Unknown command" and clicking and right clicking the signs didn't do anything as well.

Who is to say that "click me" means left-click, rofl. If Righties left-click, do Lefties right-click? Good point, will change.

No /kit command. Use the Kit sign (i.e. the one with [Kit] in the first line and the black wool background). EDIT: Looks like spawn protection is kicking in Frown EDIT #2: Yes, it was spawn protection. I turned it off. Looks like, I'm going to have to bump the priority of GP :)

Yes, it's really great to have this 1.9 server right now. Thanks, Frelling.

Some minor issues I noticed (you might already be aware of them):

- I couldn't use the kits. Seems as if there is some rather long cooldown time. Not sure if this is intented. Fortunately, AssultTank saved me from starving. -- EDIT: never mind

- The starting point in the Spigot world appears a bit unprotected. Obviously, creepers can destroy blocks while players (or at least me) can't repair the damage (sorry for that little hole).

- I have no access to set homes.

Notes so far:

1) Love the Tron guy.

2) Kits seem to work fine.

3) Donor /heal command works fine as well.

4) Could /sethome fine as well.

5) Have gotten some lag at times - I figure this is to be expected.

6) No crashes yet (yay!).

7) Odd behavior noticed: So, it looks like boats work on land now. It's slow, and you can't go uphill, but you can move around on level ground and go downhill in whatever direction you want. Also didn't seem to take any fall damage when landboating either - read into that how you will. Cool

Things seem stable for the most part so far. Will continue testing and reporting any odd stuff as encountered. Laugh

Not sure if permissions are setup differently for non-donor/subscribers but I was unable to get any kits by right clicking the signs on the black wool, nor could I set a home.  When attempting to whisper via /w playername or /sethome home it would say I was unable to use that command.

Minor lag but fairly rare, no crashes, steady fps.

Setup a double chest at spawn with stone swords, axes, picks, shovels, beds, and torches for new players also unable to use or get a kit.  Armchairgravy set a chest with carrots in it for people looking to start growing a crop.

Thanks for setting up some support. Yes, it appears that defaults permission (which include the kit permissions) are not being assigned. Will investigate.

Turns out that the group 'default' is not automatically considered the default group. It is now. Kits should work for everyone now.

Quite minor, but when we killed the Ender Dragon for the first time I don't remember him dropping any experience.

I think it dropped as one big orb and landed in the portal. I got boosted to level 68 when I went back through.

I'm not sure if this is a MC bug; when we did a couple of test kills on the development server, we noticed that instead of showering tons of XP orbs, it only dropped one. If I recall correctly it had all the XP in it. We didn't think anything of it at the time, but I appreciate you bringing it up again. Might be good to check in the Mojang Support forums.

I believe that to be correct, given that is the more logical place to put such data, though I can't be certain of it. Its probably a good idea not to squirrel stuff away in the Ender Chest just to be safe. Smile

I appreciate all the input from members. It does help a lot, even if it is just a tweak here and there. The more we discover now, the easier it will be to update Arda.

One the agenda over the next 24-48 hours is the addition of an economy plugin and GriefPrevention. I suspect that the econ plugin will continue to be iConomy for the foreseeable future. I looked at 6 other econ plugins yesterday. While some have some interesting features, none give me any level of confidence. Yes, our econ plugin will change at some point in time, even if we have to write it ourselves. For now, however, we just want basic balances and pay/receive commands. The extra time it took to switch to a different permissions plugin is making me think to stick with the devil I know... for now.

I want to get GP running as soon as possible because next to McMMO, it is the biggest and most important plugin we have that should be tested as soon as possible. The econ plugin is simply there to provide players with some fund to buy claim blocks and a golden shovel Kiss.

I can confirm this.  Whenever we have old players return after their data had been deleted, their Ender Chests are empty as well.

Good luck moving forward, frelling!

Trip6s6i6x cautioned me earlier to make sure that we get some sleep and not go insane because of this update. I'm not sure what he means, the voices have always been in my head LaughBut talk about something that could drive one to do things against their nature.

Mudwog and I were planning our day over a late breakfast and coffee when all of the sudden we heard a big shudder in the backyard only to see my power poles moving back and forth like someone had just pluck a guitar string. The power didn't go out so we figured that some idiot just ran into a pole further down the street. It was about 20 minutes later when my wife came running up from the basement telling me my server room started beeping loudly after she put a load of laundry in the washing machine.

It was complain about brownouts, even after I turn off the washing machine. To be safe I shut down all servers thinking that there might be more to this issue and a power outage would follow shortly. I also hurried across the street to my office to to do the same to my development machine and the test server only to find that the house was completely without power. Turns out that the power had gone out when the poles were waving in the wind. We didn't notice it because everything was running straight off my solar panels at home.

One of my neighbors had a tree trimming service working in his backyard taking down dying trees and they took down a bit more than they should have FrownPower cables were all over the ground. We thought that we'd be golden running on solar power, but the idiots also took down the cable TV. With no internet access and way too much data to push through mobile wireless (we tried), we have no recourse but to wait. The power issue was fixed within an hour, but the cable guys took their sweet time.

Here it is almost 5 hours later and we're finally operational again. At this point we are more ready to sit in front of bar than a computer to while away the day Kiss We'll see, we might do a little bit of both!

Uh... oh... Everyone please cross their fingers, a hoard of National Grid trucks just circled the neighborhood and are amazing at the incident site from earlier today. I hope that this is just a case of dotting I and crossing T, making sure that power poles have not be structurally affected. Please... do not let the power go out... We're on a roll.
