The time has finally come to put some motion to our 1.7.2 upgrade plan. Generally, we wait for a Beta release of the latest and greatest, but given the number of changes to this new version, I doubt we will see that happen for a while (watch, they'll post one later today Wink). Having spoken with several other high-end server techs, the consensus is that that the Development Release is sufficiently stable enough.

We're not completely out of the water just yet. There are some plugins that still haven't been updated properly but seem to work with 1.7.2. Frankly, we've been busy with our backend design to provide some much needed soft-administration capabilities. That's being put on hold to run all plugins (3rd party and our own) through a serious shakedown cruise to see what nuts and bolts come loose, if any.

We haven't decided yet; depending upon our confidence or lack thereof, we may initially deploy a 1.7.2 on a separate server so that everyone can help in ironing any "undocumented" features before we applyan update to Veterancraft. The plan would be that the this test world would most likely become our new secondary world, thus any builds would not be lost. There are some logistic issues such as Residences, shops, etc. that we haven't yet had considered. Like I said, we're still on the fence about this until we've gotten our hands a bit more dirty.

The good news is that Mudwog will be joining me in this effort for some time, now that he is settled in his new house. Sadly, we're no longer neighbors (sniff, sniff), but one has to go where the jobs are.

At this point, I cannot give an ETA of when all this will happen. If things go according to my plan, we'll spend the weekend hashing things out and doing some in-depth tests to prepare for a roll out of 1.7.2 sometime before the next weekend. However, before anyone holds my feet to the fire, this is based on the world according to Frelling and may not necessarily be a reflection of reality.

Fantastic. If there's anything a non-tech can do to help, please let us know.

We didn't get as much done over the weekend as expected, but forward progress was made. Both Mud and I are dealing with a mad XMAS push at our workplaces for the first part of this week; an unfortunate side effect of working with a bunch of procrastinators. Hopefully, we'll get back to it by Wed/Thu. The plan for now is that Mud will come visit for the weekend and we'll push as hard as we can to get something out the door.

Just a quick heads up. Mud and I are going to be working on the test version of 1.7.2 on our server on Sunday. This shouldn't impact Veterancraft, but if it does apologies in advance. The worst case scenario is that there may be some additional lag.

Looks like we are ready to begin the update process. I think we hunted down the last of the lag issues and are ready to give this a try. I'm not sure exactly when this will happen, but it will be sometime late night Thursday or early morning Friday. We will have to take the server down for updates and then test once more. This shouldn't take more than 90 minutes. During this time, the server may be started and stopped several times, so please be mindful when you get the warning that VC is in Maintenance Mode. I'll try to give a heads up before we start, but it all depends on how busy tomorrow is going to be.

This is the first phase of the update in which we may make sure that the server is operational and that there no issues with configurations and software. After that, we will work on bring up a new 1.7.4 Seraphs Realm world. Please note that when that happens the 30 day count down for Outer Reaches will start; after which it will be removed.

Shops inventory databases also need to be updated to account for new 1.6.2 and above items. Hopefully, we will get those configs updated over the weekend.

As usual, I will gently remind everyone not to pester our staff about when this and that will happen. It will happen when it happens.

I'm getting tired of apologizing, but the truth is that I need to once more; so more egg on my face - its okay, I'll make an omelet. There were some serious side effects from my knee surgery that pretty much had all my attention; everything else in real life and VC had to take a back seat. The good news is that things are better, finally. I'm going to try coordinating with Mud tomorrow to see when we can push the first phase of the updates to the server, which by now is long overdue.
