Minecraft 1.12 was released yesterday. Woot!!! I am happy that it came out this soon. Up until about three weeks ago, I had not expected a release until mid-July. Then again, we have had our collective heads buried under the hood of VC server systems, we would have probably missed anything short of an extinction-level event. That said, I will keep it short; suffice it to say, a lot has happened on our end – all for the good.
MD5 just announced that Spigot 1.12 has been released for general use. This release has some significant changes that will most likely affect plugins that continued to rely on older deprecated API calls. Fortunately, our plugins have already been “sanitized” as much as possible. As mentioned in previous posts, we were aware that Ebean support would be dropped and are ready for it.
We will be going straight to 1.12. Furthermore, it will not have a significant effect on the release of the test server. Any delays of the test server are purely due to those damn bullet-dodging engineers. The timing of 1.12 is perfect. I expect opening the test server within the next 48 hours with the caveat that I’ve not yet had an opportunity to test Grief Prevention with 1.12.

Quick update. There were a few unexpected issues with 1.12, mostly in regards to database stuff, but nothing major, though time consuming. Plus we are still getting used to our new and improved development cycle. Until we master it, we are going to make a few stupid mistakes. Alas, it took more time than expected.
I virgin image of 1.12 stands ready to receive plugins and final configurations; we will definite have something up and running within the next 24 hrs or sooner.

Had to segue into learning mode to spin up on Python 3 to replace some horrendous Bash scripts that were giving us problems managing ban lists and user caches. Schooling is done, now its just a matter of conversion. We're getting there!

Much to my surprise, a routine medical procedure on Monday had an unexpected complication. While not life threatening, it was extremely discomforting for the past few days almost bringing progress to a grinding halt. Youngins should enjoy their youth while they have it
I'm better now and things are back to normal. Sadly, these and other issues keep making the test server and other goals moving targets, which is extremely frustrating.
The good news is that I started our final test host machine OS installation and configuration last night. Unfortunately, it appears that our desired configurations have caused problems with the data center's deployment mechanism. I am currently working with their technical staff to determine the problem source. I am certain is it just a corner case that their automated system cannot handle.
Our configuration profile requires manual intervention from the data center side, which somewhat defeats the purpose of automated deployment. Since this profile is intended to serve as a template for all current and future hardware, it is important to figure out what needs to be done to eliminate any type of manual intervention by us or the data center.
There are more gory details, but I'll leave those for a review after we are once more fully operational.

Turned out that the machine issue was an exception and not due to any of our configurations or problems with OVH's deployment system. Currently, we are still fiddling with our installation configuration template so that it can be used for our other servers and future ones we may add from time to time. The test cycles are slow given that it takes between 15-30 minutes for a server to fully configure. Unfortunately, this is something we cannot test locally.

After a day of fiddle and documenting host configurations I finally have a configuration that does what is needed and can readily be used to deploy other hosts. This will definitely shave off a few hours from the final upgrade.
Right now the problem is that my cable modem appears to be choking when I try upload anything larger than 120 MB. My max upload is 10 Mbps and I know my modem is rated for up to 120 Mbps upstream. This is causing problems uploading larger files such as server images and world files. The cable company says they are looking into it, but since I dropped by business level service down to residential, I've noticed that the are less quick to solve problems. Worst case, I will hop over to work tomorrow.
I'm in the process of finalizing configurations on BungeCoord, the Hub server, and the Test server.

I am getting ready to drop all third party plugins. PermissionsEx is giving us problems, sadly they are not compiler issues but instead intermittent creeping up at the weirdest moments. Given that we thought that the lead from PEX 1.0 to PEX 2.0 was warranted, but it is also given us problems with the latest support libraries included with Spigot 1.12.
We had this issue many years ago that lead us to bring critical plugins in-house and as I feared now we are subject to them again /facepalm. I've been glued to my screen every moment I can; not just for this problem, but similar ones with other 3rd-party plugins. Those can wait, but since permissions are at the core of everything, we have to iron out the kinks for opening the test server.

Just a short ping. Kinks have been ironed out as far as I can tell; at least I do not see anything lurking around the corner. However, projects at work have demanded all my attention these past few days. I hope to resume VC tasks tomorrow and get to a last round of "polishing" before pushing the initial test server "out of the door" and onto our servers. I would like to take as much advantage of this up-coming Holiday weekend to get as much testing done as possible.
Just a heads up, although initial access to test server will be open to all, we may restrict access to registered members - current and past. We will also be testing new forum software, through which members can provide better feedback, rather than cluttering up our existing VC forums. More on that later.

Just checking in, missed the 3 month anniversary of the proposition of a test server. 1.12 has added many decorative blocks, though it seems to have broken most plugins for servers. Trying to position glazed terracotta so that it lines up to make a pattern is like the worlds worst rubiks cube but I have only tried it on standing walls, not flooring, though I hear thats not much less of a hassle. Hope to see the test server up soon.

It's a sad sight to see VC still has not updated. It's sad to see so little attention given to a server that was once amazing. Maybe not neglected by all, but I fear by those whose attention is most needed to keep a server alive and well.
November 29, 2015
I remember it well, being all excited about the server updating, receiving new things to play around with. The excitement transformed into impatience, impatience transformed into annoyance and finally annoyance transformed into a bit of anger. Not because I, a loyal player on VC, deserve the update, not because I somehow would consider staff servants, not even because I have donated. But because a place I had an amazing time on, a place I was willing to spend my hard earned cash on (that means something), was falling into an abyss because of neglect. We were made empty promises over and over again. None of them was kept for the past two years. It's always "soon". And sure, we keep getting indirect messages about loads of stuff happening behind the scenes. But somehow there's always something that causes the update to be delayed in some way or another.
I understand a server is hosted by one person, probably sometimes an underappreciated task. That person does not owe anything to anyone. Not even those who donated, it's a donation after all and not a purchase, but come on... secretly we all know it's a purchase to get perks called a donation to avoid obligations. However, we're all adults and all of us can read and have agreed the terms, we know what we're getting into when paying for a donation. I think some servers deserve donations for all of the hard work the staff puts into it. But in all honesty, I think keeping your donors up to date on what's happening is the least that could be done. They are, after all, the people keeping the lights on! Generally, a Minecraft server is not about one person, it's about the community around it. It's what makes or breaks it.
In the books, I am marked as a donor to this server, and that fact is a perfect representation of the current state of the server. It is not being looked after for a second. I haven't paid a monthly fee in over one and a half year(?). The staff doesn't even know who pays around here. I haven't bothered with giving heads up, I feel that gesture should be mutual. Maybe even sending a message to players who might be paying 10$+ a month and do not play for 1.5years would be a nice gesture. Again, we're all adults; if money is being pulled from your bank and you don't notice you might not have the right to complain. But this way it feels more like a way to keep the lights on at the expense of loyal players. (It's not about what's technically right, it's about what is the right thing to do)
The loyalty some players have had and still have to this server is beyond my comprehension. Even if the server updates to 1.16 I do not know how long it will take until it falls into neglect once again. The feeling of a home is strong I suppose.
I fear I might not be able to call VC home again.
But I do really hope for those who wait patiently, that the server will update soon and bring life and activity to the server; you've deserved it. For those who don't, I hope they find or create new homes for themselves and others.
