It’s been quite a while since we dealt with an upgrade of this complexity. The complexity isn’t due to a slew of new game features, but rather changes to the core of Minecraft. For almost 3 years, plugin developers and Bukkit have relied on a player’s IGN (in-game name) as a unique identifier. Mojang’s switch to UUIDs (Universally Unique Identifier) is a good thing, but has far reaching impacts on Bukkit and ALL plugins.
The good news is that Bukkit released a Beta Build two days ago, meaning (hopefully) that they took the bull by the horns and have beaten it into submission. Many plugin developers have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for this build, so, again hopefully (lot of hoping going on) that will spur them into action and get some new releases out.
The bad news is that many plugins have not yet been updated. Some of the more notable ones have (e.g. Essentials) and some have “winged” an update that works but will most likely be destined to fail on future Mojang releases. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed. In a pinch, we can patch their plugins ourselves, but we are busier than an armless feather stuffer in a wind storm dealing with our own plugins and backend infrastructure.
In parallel to this “waiting game” we’ve taken this as an opportunity to do some strategic thinking not only from the technical side but also the operations side. Meatbawllz will probably start posting more information on the latter soon. As far as the technical side is concerned, we have added a new server on which we are deploying and testing plugins one at a time. So far, things are looking good, but we are always looking over our shoulder to see if anything is about to knock us on our kiester.
The burning question – as usual – is when will we update? All I can say at this time is that it will be on or shortly before our 3-year anniversary (6/22). This is based on the assumption that our third-party plugins will have transitioned to the UUID scheme or at least have a workaround by then. Anyways, more to comes as details become available.

According to the internet, that phrase doesn't exist! That's not something that can be said often these days.
But it should be! Just think, no arms, trying stuff feathers in something....say, a pillow case. Then a wind picks up! Awww, I just stuffed all those feathers, now they're blowing around. And I don't have any arms to use to grab them again. I'm going to be busy for days!

Actually I misquoted, it should have been a one-armed feather stuffer. Having no arms makes the wind storm somewhat less important . And yes, a feather stuffer is an older term describing those that stuffed down feathers into pillow cases, comforters, etc. I think I picked up the phrase in New England many moons ago. I'm glad to hear that internet content still has some room left for growth

(1) Do you need beta testers? Would it help if a few, selected people went to your other server and played as normal -- knowing whatever they did might be defunct in 2 seconds or 2 months?
I'm hesitant to answer this question fearing the slew of "me 2s" that may follow. But yes, we will most likely be using a few beta testers when we get to the point of testing overall functionality. At this point, we are still deep inside the inner working of plugins.

I think you were kinda going for the "one armed paper-hanger in a wind storm" thing whilst attempting to stuff feathers.
As for beta testers: I was kinda thinking you could cherry pick some that you trust to (a) play the way you need, (b) can spend the time on it you need, and (c) won't brag about being beta testers...cause otherwise you'll be bomboarded with "I wanna do it toooooooo" emails.
