While we are all excited about 1.7.2's new features, it also makes us cringe a bit. Many changes generally mean lots of downstream work for everyone else (i.e. Bukkit, plugin devs, VC, etc.). Under normal circumstances, I'm not at all surprised that Bukkit hasn't even released a Development Release (DR) yet, even though 1.7.2 has been out for a little over a week. But with Minecon just having wrapped up, I suspect that Bukkit and PI devs update interests haven't been focused 100% either.
Hopefully, we will start seeing some initial DRs toward the end of next week. I suspect that our server's update to 1.7.2 will take at least another week, or two, after a reasonably stable DR is available. While I haven't checked yet, I hope that our core PI developers (e.g. mcMMO, Residence, etc.) are gearing up just as we are.
Fortunately, the current Minecraft Launcher make update issues of the past less troublesome and we don't have to warn you not to update your client. Simply click Edit Profile and select Use version: release 1.6.4 to rollback. If you are actively checking out 1.7.2, you can always create another profile so that you can easily switch back and forth between 1.6.4 and 1.7.2.
If it turns out that updates are going to take more time than expected, we will probably consider throwing up a second, albeit temporary, Vanilla 1.7.2 server so that our members can enjoy new features with their friends.

Check it out. In short, progress is entirely out of our hands until Bukkit is 1.7.2 compliant.

Supposedly an initial development release should be released later this week. However, that said, this will be a very early release after a crap-ton of code changes. Just because it compiles won't mean that it will run. The silver lining is that at least PI Devs (and VC) can start updating plugins to fit API changes and whatever else comes with it.

I'm certain that many of you share the same frustrations as me that Bukkit's 1.7.2 update is taking this long. From what I understand, Mojang has made a lot of codebase changes that is making this update more difficult. It's been a blessing in disguise for me, given that my time was extremely limited these past few weeks. But even so, I don't want to stagnate for too long or I'll loose my Java coding edge .
I know I spoke of possibly putting up a 1.7.2 vanilla server up. Given what I know now, rather than believing broken insider promises, I should have put one up two weeks ago. I'm not faulting anyone at Bukkit. I took a look at the new 1.7.2 Minecraft code base myself. I feel for the those guys doing the thankless job of updating Bukkit.
How do you guys feel about a vanilla 1.7.2 while we wait for better to come along? VC would still be available while the vanilla server would be on a different port.

Now that the usual holiday stuff is over for a couple of weeks until XMAS, we're reviewing the current development release available for 1.7.2. As EvilSeph said, this is an early release and though its guaranteed to compile, doesn't not mean that it is stable or without problems. However, it will allow other PI Devs and VC to start working on their respective plugins and get them ready for a more stable release.
