Fortunately, a lot of the legwork for this update was already done, so I was able to address a lot more plugins this time around. Contrary to my description of phased updates, this is more of a traditional update. The following plugins will not be updated in this cycle:

  • Multiverse - still requires review
  • mcMMO - still exhibits a lag issue

The following plugins will be disabled:

  • SimpleSpleef - Due to an API change, SimpleSpleef needs to be updated. We have source code, but given that this plugin is no longer maintained by the original authors, we will be looking for a suitable replacement first. Suggestions are welcome, but please read the plugin recommendation guidelines first (you can't miss them, they are in the sticky thread in the Suggest Box). Until then, automated Spleef games will not be available. Should we not find a suitable replacement/substitute, we will consider bringing this plugin in-house and continue its maintenance for the foreseeable future.

The update is scheduled for Sunday 01/13/13, 10:00 AM EST. Estimated down time this time around will be around 45-60 minutes. I will be adding and testing some additional scripts to automate several upgrade tasks and lessen down time requirements.

Server was shutdown at 10:15 AM and upgrades went smoothly taking only a little shy of 35 minutes to complete. There was a small hiccup with Dynmap, but that turned out to be "pilot error"; at least I managed to miss all the larger mountains. Based on the new scripts and tools installed, I will expect that an initial upgrade phase will take no longer than 20-30 minutes in the future compared to the usual 60-90 minutes.

So to recap: this update round pretty much brought everything up-to-date except for mcMMO and Multiverse; those will be updated over the next couple of days as time permits. One a side note: just because a plugin isn't updated, doesn't mean that it won't be available; we just won't be running with the latest and greatest version. Case in point, some of our speed readers interpreted that the lack of a Multiverse update meant they wouldn't be able to get to our secondary worlds. If a plugin will be disabled or removed, it will be specifically noted, as in the case of SimpleSpleef.

It seems that mcMMO devs got around to dealing with several of mcMMO performance issues over the past few days. I am currently testing the latest development build and if it passes muster, it should be updated sometime today.

Figures. As soon as I focused on mcMMO, it start clamoring for attention like a spoiled child, throwing temper tantrums on the server. The good news is that the source of unknown performance hits finally come to light - caught, but improperly handled exceptions due to API changes, for those that are curious.

We are now running the latest dev version of mcMMO - wish I could replace problem children that easily Laugh. Unfortunately, we not out of the woods completely. The new Salvage ability has a minor problem. I'm in the process of submitting a fix to the dev.

mcMMO Devs are on top of it today. Salvage issue was fixed and updated. Check off, mcMMO update from the list. Our current version of Multiverse is working well and thus will not be updated. Outside of the Spleef issue, this round of updates - as far as players are concerned - is done.
