I had some trouble installing Forge and Optifine before, and would like to ask for some help/advice for installing for 1.8 now.

If anybody has some links to downloads and/or step by step instructions please, would be very helpful.

Thanks :)

I had some issues myself.  The biggest problem I had was that I couldn't get Optifine to work with Forge AND Magic Launcher.

So I had leave Magic Launcher behind.

Forge is still on 1.8, so Optifine needs to match it.  It will run with the server just fine.

So..., for doing just Forge and Optifine:

  1. Start up Minecraft with the Mojang Launcher, and build a profile using 1.8.0.  Start the game (so everything dowloads) and then Quit.
  2. Get Forge: http://files.minecraftforge.net/.  Build 1334 is recommended right now and works just fine.
  3. Install Forge (I recommend using the Installer).
  4. Get Optifine: http://www.minecraftforum.net/.....ures-aa-af.  Optifine is up to 1.8.4, but you MUST get 1.8.0 in order to work with Forge.  U D3 works just fine.
  5. Place the Optifine .jar in your /.minecraft/mods folder.
  6. Start up Minecraft again, and edit your profile and select 1.8.0 with Forge.
  7. Save the Profile and Play Minecraft!
  8. Join VeteranCraft! :D

For mods that need loaders like Majic Launcher or LiteLoader or ModLoader, I can't help.

I have been having trouble with Optifine + Forge, it has bean leaking massive amounts of RAM.

Sometimes minecraft took up 4-5GB of ram. Not sure if that had something to do with me failing at installing it correctly, but it wasnt playable after half an hour.

Just something to keep in mind!

(also, if someone knows the solution, help would be appreciated! :) )

I'd trying reinstalling Java and/or Minecraft first (if you haven't already).

If this helps, these are the versions I have :

Forge : forge-1.8-11.14.1.1334-installer-win

Optifine : OptiFine_1.8.0_HD_U_D3

Work's fine for me....and those who wanted a forge minimap mod (without running another launcher) I have

xaeros_minimap_v1.4.9_1.8_Forge....Its not the best minimap mod, but does the job for me :)

Sorry, but I have to ask stupid questions since I don't speak tech:

Last i checked optifine wasn't out for 1.8.6 yet. Ditto forge.

The older versions will work?

Yes.  Older versions will work, but you may find some client-side bugs that were squashed out in further versions.

I'm running 1.8.0 Forge and Optifine with almost no issue.  The most I'm seeing is some chunk generation lag, right now.

I've noticed i can't look directly at a beacon without the beam disappearing when i'm on forge/optifine. I've also noticed the current recommended version of forge doesn't seem to work on at least one laptop the family uses to play minecraft (and without that, the 1.8 version of optifine can't be used either), it just crashes to the launcher every time i try to launch the game (no idea why there, even tred a few version previous to the recommended one and all versions newer, none worked for the one laptop).

As for chunk generation lag, you could try maybe going into optifine and switching between smooth and multi-core, those can affect chunk loading. I also seem to remember an issue with nvidia as well somewhere in the 3d rendering section that i used to have to change as well for minecraft -- i'll have to look that up later though (i'm not home atm).

Oh, and there are also some optimized "fast render" or similar options in optifine as well that can definitely mess with chunk loading... again, i'll check further later.

Cool!  Thx!

Sorta related:  what are the approved/favorite mini-maps?  I've sen little bits of info around, but it seems to conflict sometimes. Or I am just not reading it correctly.

Re: Chunk issues

So yeah, now that I'm home and looking at it directly, some things have changed a bit with optifine. I can't find a way to switch between smooth and multi-core in this version (1.8), so I don't think that's applicable anymore (?). In any case, maybe trying turning off Lazy Chunk Loading (if it's on) under options -> video settings -> performance. While you're in there, also take a look at the Dynamic Updates, Fast Render, and Fast Math settings as well. All of those settings can play a role in how the game performs.

Oh, and the thing with nvidia was general block flickering of everything on screen... which it doesn't sound like you have an issue with, but in any case... i got rid of that problem i had before by going into nvidia control panel -> manage 3d settings and turning off threaded optimization.

Hope you get your issue figured out there, LWK.

And to second SlocumFamily2's question, I'm also curious myself if anyone's found a good minimap for 1.8. It doesn't look like Rei's Minimap has been updated yet from what I can see... so i'm kinda sadface there too.

Thanks, Trip.

It seems that xaeros's minimap, that Spyborg found is the best replacement for a minimap.

Keep in mind, that it has some features we do not allow, but noticing the need for a minimap will not disallow the mod completely.

But namely, do not use Cave Mode, or display Mobs.  We trust our users to be on the honor system for this.  Thank you.
