i got back to fishing today, and when i fished 2 almost identical axes right one after the other, i was already thinking "WTF!" - but soon after, i got a 3rd and a 4th identical axe (#2, #3 and #4 are completely identical besides the repair status) which makes me think, there is something wrong, either with mcmmo fishing, or with the random number generation.

the 1st of the 4 axes is also almost identical, except it is missing the unbreaking II part of the enchantments.

i'm not complaining, just thought i should make the techs aware of this. Soon after, i got "normal" (i.e. seemingly random) items again.2013-04-03_20.45.07.pngImage Enlarger

Thanks for pointing this out. I'll try to run some tests when I have some time; afterall its mcMMO Kiss. However, chances are that it was a case of apophenia - seeing patterns in random data. Laugh

4 times in a row? 3 times the exact same enchantments? And not something that you get often, no 4 enchants stacked on one item? no way it was a pattern in random data. also i did not get any other items in between these 4 catches (maybe some fish) something was off. it was like the random numbers were "stuck" on some specific value for a while.

i'll keep an eye out for this, no idea as of yet what "triggered" this.

Rolling six 1s in a row with a fair die is still random, albeit with a low probability (1/6)^6 = 0.0021433%. All depends on the number of possible events - the less there are, the less random it will look; the more there are, the more random it will look. I misspoke when I cast doubt on mcMMO; those drops come from Minecraft itself. But just because it doesn't seem like it should happen, doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Maybe you should go out a buy a Lotto ticket (10% goes to VC if you win). Laugh

it's not like getting six 1's in a row, more like 4 times in a row the exact same lotto numbers would have been drawn. It's not impossible, but very unlikely.

Six 1's or a hundred 100's in a row still doesn't make it different, its still a probabilistic event. Thanks for agreeing with me finally; and hopefully, you did go buy a Lotto ticket or two.

it seems i'm not the only one having this "issue" - someone mentioned in chat he's getting several identically enchanted pieces of armor (with different "health bar", but otherwise identical)

it's not really a problem. but i'm worrying if the randomness quirk affects other things as well.

Also could have been another lotto winner Laugh Thanks for the info though.

yesterday, i fished up 5 identical diamond swords: (except their damage value)

the quirky items seem to have in common that they have an ungodly amount of enchantments on them:

(i keep the "quirky" items in a chest, feel free to take a look if you're doubting me - coords in screenshot ;)

i have now 8 identically enchanted diamond swords (and none with a different enchantment on them)

i also have found lots of pairs, triples, quintuples when checking my newer items in chests.

it seems since the 1.5 update (or the mcmmo update that came with it) the items you can get by fishing just are not that random any more (they used to be a lot more random before the update: i'm pretty sure there was no item with more than 2 enchants on it that had a duplicate in my chests prior to the 1.5 update)

the chance to get items with lots of enchants on it also has gotten higher.

of course all this could just as well be a side effect of my fishing skill going higher and higher. (notable info: i'm #3 on mctop fishing, datonis is #2)

that being said, i will stop reporting on this, since it seems no one but me finds it interesting ;-)

I find this very interesting. If the random number generation code that determines whether there's a fish on your line during a given tick is the same code that determines the identity of your treasure and what enchantments appear on it, that might begin to explain what is happening. Mind you, it would not explain why this has only been happening since the 1.5(.1) update and (seemingly) only to players with jaw-droppingly high fishing levels (jealousssss...).

Thank you! Whether its a bug, statistical freakishness, or pure dumb luck, its not worth the time and effort. No pun intended, we have much bigger fish to fry. I'm confident that if other admins find this problematic, that the issue will resolve itself eventually. For now, this Support issue is closed, since any further discussion is just flogging a dead horse.
