I am not sure if this was an intended change or not to spark more pvp there but players now show up on the livemap when in the nether.  I have to worry enough about remembering to toggle off teleport so higher donors can't tp and kill but also players with mini map addons sneaking up on me with ease.  I am hoping this was not an intended change but I don't know.

I thought that players were always visible on the nether layer of the dynmap.

Bring diamond armour and a sharpness 3 sword is the only advice I can give on this situation...

Players have always shown up on the livemap, even in the nether.   There are some times that you're hidden, but I am not sure what the criteria is.  The minimap doesnt really show anything in the nether, it just sees from the top down, which means all it sees is the bedrock layer on top.

Personally, I have fire resist and invisibility pots on when I am running around a lot, and my compass is always on my bar for a quick getaway if needed.

I have never been killed by another player in the nether and I am aware of how to protect myself, I was simply asking if this change was intended because I can't remember ever seeing players in the nether on the live map in the past when looking and I have looked many times.  Due to poor pvp mechanics of minecraft pvp, lag, and many peoples pc's running low fps there usually a person's best friend when attacked is a quick /home.

I checked for the criteria on Tuesday, and they seem to work: Lighting.  It seems to be the only factor.  If you're in the dark of the Nether, you won't be visible on the Dynmap, but if you're in the midst of fires or close to lava, your lighting factor will be high enough to make you visible.  BTW, the same should be true in Vetronia, but torches don't provide enough light.  I haven't tested whether standing near a lava pool in Vetronia, even underground, will make you visible, but I would guess that it does.

Thanks for the info LWK, When I checked myself on it earlier I was only surrounded by netherrack and basically in a netherrack cave but that block seems to give off its own ambient lighting so perhaps that enough.  I have tried testing what constitutes showing up on the vetronia map but seems to be pretty varied with or without lighting.

As far as I can tell, the main factor appears to be skylight. I disappear on the Vetronia map when I'm in my well-lit house (just above sea level) but reappear when outside. The nether has skylight > 0 in seemingly random places despite the lack of sky (SL in your f3, for those who didn't know). I'll experiment when I'm back in the nether.
