I could be mistaken, but I don't believe MineChat registers any differently than a normal login. The notification that you're on MineChat looks like you say it, and the only thing keeping you in place is the lack of controls. It is, as far as I am aware, just a stripped down client. VC can't tell the difference.
In any case, when you're talking you don't go afk, or at least your first chat once you're afk will bring you back. So as long as you are actively, you shouldn't be kicked.

Our AFK kick is used to limit the impact of unattended or unproductive game play. People who log in via MineChat and other similar applications are only on for the social value of VeteranCraft. While we enjoy our community members being social, player slots are a direct cost to us. The more slots occupied, the more processing power, memory, and bandwidth are required, all of which have tangible costs. Those who treat VeteranCraft like an IM service are wasting resources doing something that is better suited to Skype, etc.

I couldn't have said it any better. Thank you Emulated. From a technical point of view, I have nothing against Minechat. It is a wonderful demonstration of the ingenuity of some developers. However, player slots are a precious commodity that we do not want to see wasted solely for the purposes, as Emulated put it, of a glorified IM service. Even if we wanted to, there is no stable method for detecting Minechat clients to override our AFK settings. Consider yourself lucky, because if we had, chances are that we would deny access.
That is not to say that I'm against VC members socializing through alternate means. I've looked into various Skype connector plugins in the past. Unfortunately, many have been false starts and those that exist are not stable or flexible enough to even consider on our server. If we didn't have bigger fish to fry, we could develop something ourselves. Maybe when we have some spare time...
