As we all know there are quite alot of new features added in the new version (1.9). One of which I am super excited about; the "Elytra". The wings that allow you to soar through the sky like a majestic eagle.

These wings will be availible in the end after going through some new structures. Sadly these will only have a limited availibility, just like the dragon eggs. And that is the subject I'd like to chat about in this topic.

I fear that if the server updates to 1.9, and we keep things the vanilla way, only a handfull of people will be able to obtain one of those Elytra. And since they have a durability I think barely anyone will actually use them because they are too valuable to just waste on a few glides.

I think it would be a shame if this feature would be lost due to it's rarity. So I would like to suggest to implement a way to obtain a Elytra via for example a crafting recipe that could even look something like this:

(Nether Star could be swapped for an Ender Pearl, Wither Head, Diamond Armor or whatever)

I'd love to see the Elytra as a common thing in VC, since it would allow for new ways of transport around the large and streched world or maybe just for parkour minigames. I hope the staff is willing to consider these ideas or maybe discuss with me what else could be possible. Also I'd like the community to pitch in their ideas on how we could make this possible.

EDIT:  I was notified that the Elytra can be repaired with leather, so they are fairly easy to maintain. Also they do not break, when they are on their lowest durability, you just cannot glide with them anymore. They will be lost when thrown on a cactus or into lava.

EDIT2: Maybe implementing a recipe is hard? Maybe a villager can trade the Elytra. 2 Feather + 1 Nether Star = Elytra

Have this on a tier 4 villager?

I agree with ted on this I really don't want to have to risk so much and compete so much just to acquire a glider. It would really be nice and I think more in the spirit of Minecraft to have some way of obtaining them in arda without going to the end and risking losing your good gear and tools to other players. Another possible solution I could see is making them all server property and selling them at a set price on the server to prevent players from having to compete for them. I'm not saying this becuase I think anything is owed I just think that a lot of problems could spawn from players fighting over elytra because they want them. I really hope this transition goes over well cuase I really want to see veterancraft continue to be a place where players can have fun and share their minecraft experiences with other player.

I'd agree with OP on this. Making gliders craftable but requiring something like a nether star would give it a good level of rarity along the lines of where beacons are currently: Rare (in the neighborhood of thousands of shillings per) but not altogether unobtainable by regular players. And in all honesty, I think that is exactly where they should be.

Gliders aren't just cosmetic additions. They have function. It's a whole new mechanic that players are going to want to use. And having played the latest snapshots myself... it's actually a shame how rare and hard to obtain this item is, really, because it's a really fun mechanic to use. I'd hate to be at a point where I can only use it offline because it's basically unobtainable otherwise.

As a long-time member and server regular, I'd urge you to consider allowing these new items (and the mechanics that go with them) through utilization of some kind of limitations similar to what tedisvet outlined above. Otherwise, the only way we're going to see these on the server at all will be one set... in a single shop somewhere... selling for 1,000,000 or more shillings... and that would be a genuine loss for everyone.

The details suggestions and comments are appreciated. It is extremely enjoyable to read them when members that take time to layout their ideas; thank you very much. Anyone that has been with VeteranCraft for some time understands that we try to stay as close as possible to Notch's vision in regards to how Minecraft should be played. Obviously, these days "Notch's Vision" is more of a metaphor; maybe we should call it "Bill's Vision."

All games have those rare things that require much upfront work, investment, and/or time to acquire. We all know that rare items are included for several reasons. Not only do they provide a feather-in-the-cap for those that overcame the trials and tribulations to achieve the end goal, they also promotes cooperative game play, team building, and creativity resulting in rewards for patient and persistent players.

Before we consider creating a shortcut to a goal, we will let it play out as it was intended to be. If the task turns out to be too hard, chances are that future Minecraft updates will nerf/adjust them accordingly, especially given the fact that the wings are essential to exploring The End. However, if it turns out to be too hard and MojaSoft doesn't budge, then we would consider an alternative approach. Case in point, XPVault, which we developed to circumvent the exponential cost of experience levels and catastrophic loss of such at death.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their disinclination to do so. - D. Adams
