I have been thinking lately (both rare and dangerous), and I have noticed that for the most part when a player is banned and their things seized they tend to sit in the Armory gathering dust as if it were an evidence locker. While we have seen a benefit to stockpiling supplies such as glass or obsidian when it comes to large-scale government constructs, most of the supplies such as wheat, tools, and even diamonds go unused.
I suggest that instead of moving items to the Armory they are moved to a storage facility akin to a public storage building - each lot of goods to a unit, then the units is auctioned off via the forums to the highest bidder. If you have seen the popular television show Storage Wars (I have not, so correct me if I am wrong) people can bid on a unit but they are not allowed to see its contents. Sometimes they take a loss, and sometimes they find valuables. Implementing an auction style system would help get rid of the bulk of the Armory's clutter without flooding the market with free goods.
Another reason I support this is that so when the Government needs supplies for a project, instead of relying on confiscated goods it can add that item to the purchasing list at the Government Shop and help support enterprising players who want to help their community.

I love it!
I do think that some moderation would be in order, though.....a savy and dedicated Viceroy could buy out the entire auction out from under everyone else. Could they be done possibly in groups at a time, and the number of units that can be awarded be limited? For example, 20 units up for auction and it's limited so that any one user can win a maximum of 2 in that group? I think that would give the lower ranks and non-donators a fighting chance.
In any case, I think it's a great way to spend some of the extra booty the staff has squirreled away!

I love the concept. However, this would require some clear and precise rules/guidelines, lest you be inundated with the usual dribble from those making a profession out of feigning innocence.

I had at first thought to propose the units be auctioned off only after a suitable number has been filled. Looking at how often we ban, ten could make this a weekly event. My concern here would be participation. If there are ten units up for auction, and only four or five interested people bidding - we're going to find that buyers are snapping up units for next to nothing for lack of competition.
I understand with strong publicity and a few good finds more people will become interested, but considering the pool of players who have a suitable amount of disposable income I'm just not sure how many units we could auction off at once before it starts to kill any chance of competing bids.
Everything aside we won't know until we try. If this suggestion is approved and the processes we use aren't optimal we can always shake things up and try again.

She doesn't need more Devil.I like the idea but can the buyers get a number on how many chests are in the"storage shed"? Anyways, I think its a great idea.
I actually like the "Let's Make a Deal!" aspect of what's being suggested. Where like one storage unit might have a single half-chest....full of diamonds, another might have 20 double-chests....with all of them empty except a single loaf of bread.

Heh. Sorry for slightly being off topic. Regarding the topic at hand I have seen the show and I do like the idea. I think each storage area should have maybe 6 double chests and people are only allowed to peak into 1 particular chest and they bid that way. That one chest would be the same for everyone to peak at. So that one chest could have 3 diamonds, but all the rest of the chests could be cobblestone, or the first chest could be filled with cobblestone and the others contain about 500 diamonds.

I had been hoping this could be done as an unsupervised event. If we were to give container permission to one of the chests, not only would be have to fiddle with multiple subzones each time someone wins the auction - we would open ourselves up to the chance of theft. It would be strange to auction off a unit of goods that were stolen from another unit...
How I would imagine this happening would be for us to continue as we have been, except when we confiscate a banned players goods we move them to an empty unit instead of the Armory. Each week we would create a thread listing unit numbers as well as perhaps a screen shot of one of the chests in that unit. Each unit would then be available for bidding for the next few days, after which the unit would go to the highest bidder. This way those who cannot attend an in game event due to non-Minecraft obligations are not left out of the bidding process.
Players would be responsible for collecting the goods out of any units they win. Anything left over after a period of time (seventy-two hours?) would go into the free chests or disposal at staff discretion.

That seems like the most pain free way. Whenever someone wins the auction, we /money take the amount, then we just pset container true for them. anything that isn't gone in time gets tossed. Good shilling sink too.
