I have seen the signs of it from under my home on the Vetronia map to the temp maps of OR and SR.  Just a quick glance at todays ban page and the majority banned are xraying.  I have seen in the appeals of a couple that it was allowed on a server somewhere but I have in 2 years of playing MC and looking at servers yet to find one that allowed xraying.  My issue is it doesn't seem to be that serious an offense here.  People are sometimes simply asked to remove and stop, maybe a short temp ban, or they are banned but if they can make a passibly coherent appeal because their friends play here and they were just using it for single player then they get unbanned.  These same people about 75% of the time are banned hours to a few days later for breaking another major rule.  People who xray have no respect for the rules and are the saddest rule breakers because sweet jesus how hard is it here to get diamonds?  They are cheap, you can get them from chests in natrually created abandoned mines to digging/fishing/salvaging (when levels get high enough).  Oh and honest mining.  At current prices in shops a new player could vote one time and get a diamond.  Vote the full 7 and you got enough for a pick, shovel, and sword.  Basically there is zero excuse for doing it.

Asking for a zero tolerance policy seems out of the question with how lenient the server is but how about stiffer penalties?  Minimum ban times?  A week? A month?  If its not a nightmare for techs, how about zeroing their mcmmo levels?  All the other places I have looked at its a perma ban. with occasionally second chances provided for donors.  Can we do anything to make the punishment more severe to give some small measure of deterence to people thinking about doing it?  Right now someone loses their friend and immediately starts posting in chat asking for them to be unbanned and people just say "tell them to post an appeal"  There is an extremely good chance they will be unbanned, no matter what.  The only thing people can't get unbanned for at the moment is a chargeback.  Its disheartening to honest legit players to see no real consequence for cheating or to find signs of people cheating frequently when they are mining.  The server is picking up steam and growing pretty rapidly, I hope we can tighten the rules to handle the increase.

From a new player perspective (less than 2 weeks), I also concur with this suggestion to consider a more effective solution.

It's not difficult to succeed here without cheating. Those that do cheat diminish themselves and others. With no room for debate, x-raying is cheating.  When I'm mining I have that "aha!" moment when coming across gold or diamonds. I have no idea whether it's the next block, or 500 blocks later, that I'll find another.

This. I can understand a new player lacking in knowledge or etiquette to a point, but installing a x-ray mod requires premeditation and an amount of technical knowledge (albeit small). Are we to believe that this player was "just using it for single player" because, what, switching to creative mode was beyond him? If anyone can see a line of reasoning that would lead to such a player being or becoming an active or worthwhile member of this community, I would like to hear it.

I agree completely with you, Wally.

The vast majority of those who X-Ray are players who have little or nothing positive to contribute to the server anyway- stiffer penalties against X-Rayers would have no adverse effect, because it would filter out players of low caliber, but a higher-caliber player, who for some unknown reason decided to X-Ray, would return to the server without the illusion that he or she could break the server's rules and not be punished.

The minimum ban-time seems like a good suggestion; I think that, in addition to being the most simple, it also has the most potential to allow high quality players to return, whereas a lower quality player would be deterred by a week-long ban and would, most likely, run off to a Factions server.

Save yourself a lot of frustration and don't worry your pretty little heads about Veterancraft's Ban & Appeal process? Our staff does an excellent job dealing with violators of all types. Topic closed.
