"SoundCenter (formerly CustomMusic) allows you to set music boxes or regions that stream your own music, sound effects or webradio to all players in realtime. It also implements a simple voice chatfor Minecraft. To use the features that SoundCenter offers, you and everyone who wants to hear music and voice chat must use the SoundCenter client, which is running on
http://www.sound-center.com. You do not have to download or install anything. The client is running as a java applet on the website. You will get a message with a link to the client when you join the server. When you follow this link, the client will automatically connect. - Could not be easier."
Pro's
- Easy accessible chat without any expectations from other players
- A handy way to talk to friends while gathering resources, mining or hunting.
- By default the people within a certain range of you can hear you. This way you wont bother other people with your talking.
- I think it will improve the community, people will feel like they are talking to people, not just a nickname.
- ...
Con's
- Users will have to install a small program before they will be able to use this service.
- Owners,Admins and Moderators wont be able to track every word you say to other people. Like swearing and such. Small pro to this: You won't bother anyone with it that is not near you.
- Not sure if this is a con: Data usage. This is what the author says about data usage: Voice transfer needs about 4KB/s, so 1 user speaking and 5 users listening will take about 4KB/s downstream and 20KB/s upstream for the server. That’s not very much and unless you are speaking globally, only those who are near to you can hear you.

I'm a big fan of VoIP being used with whatever game I'm currently playing (presuming multi-player of course).
I've been running my own TeamSpeak server on my own server hardware for years now. I, along with family and friends, use it for everything: from simple chatting, to Minecraft, Elite Dangerous, PayDay2, the current MMO of the day.... I even have a locked down chat room for our mobile dev group.
One comment on the expectation of talking: You will run into players that love to use VoIP and those that don't. I've been on many VoIP servers in various gaming environments that don't require or expect users to participate. It's perfectly fine and encouraged for gamers/party members/guild members/raid members, etc. to just connect to a chat room and hang out and listen. No pressure to chat, but handy to hear what's going on if there is an interest.
My concern regarding this plugin is two fold, both as a player and as a mod:
1. VC had a VoIP server in the past. From what you can read on these very forums, it seems it was sort of a test/experiment to see how popular/useful it would be for the player base. It was shutdown due to little use/interest. Chances are, if you're into voice chat, you have a functional solution already in place that you use to chat with your gaming buddies. So it begs the obvious question with anything new: How much would it be used?
2. As a plugin to be added to VC, if implemented, this plugin would be a fully supported and endorsed form of communication on VeteranCraft. As such, it would be another form of communication that would need to be monitored/policed to ensure it was being used in an appropriate manner and met our community guidelines on what we do and do not allow.
Should a situation arise where it isn't used appropriately, the plugin would need to support all of the admin/mod functions needed to handle infractions. As well, simple "logging" voice chat for confirmation of an infraction isn't as simple as text chat.
