This will be controversial, I know.  Bear with me....

With DynMap being offline, we have all had to adjust, and I have been coming to a realization:

DynMap is great for Vetronia.  And it's good for exploiting a "resource heaven" like the Outer Reaches.  It is murder on pure exploration.  As soon as it's revealed on DynMap, there's no more mystery, at least above ground.

To me, I would love keep the OR for basic resources, and preserve the SR for exploration by not having the DynMap available for the SR....at least not for non-staff.

And for those who would love to build secret projects, it's a way to build out of the sight of nosy neighbors without having to do it underground.

For aspiring map-makers, and those who really want to have a frame of reference, 1.4 is going to include mountable maps, so that a wall tiled with these maps can provide accurate reference, and if we use a method of storing and copying maps (it is going to be added in the next update of that mod, and that's the mod I'm looking at for making the Archives functional), it's Minecraft-centric way of mapping out the SR without utterly destroying the exploration factor.

Anyways, that's my plug, I'm happy to debate it.

[Note: I also was thinking about suggesting disabling most /tp and compass functions in the SR, but thought better of it. :) ]

I wasn't really fond of SR being included in DynMap to begin with, especially the isometric view where you can see the depth of certain areas.  With that said I am for your idea with disabling it to that region.  Kind of adds a new dimension to the world besides just adding emerald ores and biome set NPC villages.

This is my signature and I hope you enjoy it. - Dalferes

from a mod point of view, having dynmap is quite nice to see people's movement rates.  Because dynmap is updated live, I can spot if someone is using a movement hack of almost any type.  Perhaps as LWK said, make it a staff viewable option?

I myself personally don't like maps. I admit to using them, but I prefer the exploration. WE have many options with DynMap. For example, we reduce the resolution so that you can't read license plates on minecarts Kiss We could also just have a 40,000 ft view of biomes/topos to give some clues as to where an interesting spot may be without giving away everything. No map, would be perfectly fine with me.

In regards, to using DynMap as a speed hack detection aid, its pretty tough to do given that positions are only updated every 2-3 secs. Granted, with a keen eye one could spot excessive use of speed hacks, but most savvy hacks don't use them that blatantly.

i have to say that when my roomate and i tried to map out our region, we had trouble with the maos working right. it would only load strips and bloches of the maps, i dont know if that still occurs or if it was just us.

i actually agree that seraphs shouldnt have a map, i actually havent been using it at all lately and it really makes it more of an exploration game. so i think it should be removed entirely, but as you said light, others definantly feel differently

I don't know but maybe I'm missing something. If you like the idea of no map then why don't you just not use it. I personally don't use the map in the OR or SR. Also I'm trying to think of something I've built that I don't want anyone to see. Just my thoughts.

Agreed,

pherian and I are building something massive in the SR that we'd love people to see... maybe a portalship is going to have to get put in, instead?

I can see both perspectives, so perhaps we should make it as frelling says and give a birds eye view, and nothing else. It would be enough to peer down on players if staff need to (although they could always tpo vanished)

I love the map, but I also love the idea of the 2ndary worlds being exploratory. I would also not be against removing the nether map. Its kinda worthless anyways.

I'm in agreement with the usefulness, or lack thereof, of the Nether map. It just wastes disk space and CPU cycles. If I can figure out how to prevent dynmap from updating tiles once a topo and biome map are generated then it makes sense to offer both. There is no pressing need for those types of maps to update constantly as players build. Biomes are static, and topos should only show geographic features regardless of what structure are built - short of someone leveling a mountain or building one up. If there really is a need to update, we can always force maps to rebuild.

From what has been said about the update, maps are being fixed so that they will load properly and align to chunks.  It should make them easier to use.

Well, while I might like to not use a map, I would also want it to be fair.  If everyone else had the map, would it truly be "explorable?"  If you're heading off into the "great unknown," but it's already been revealed and readily available on DynMap, is it still unknown just because you can't see it?

As for building something secret, of course I'd always want people to see what I build.  Otherwise, I'd be playing SPC.  But I guess it's the difference between a huge "OMG!" unveiling, and building it while people are hanging around: "This is cool!"  "Can I help?"  "What are you going to do over here?"  "Everybody come look at this!"....etc.  Not that I mind those questions at all, but I think there is a place for both types of builds.

I'm just saying. What wouldn't I want someone to see. A giant penis. That was clearly said against the rules so what is there to hide. If u want to hide something build it on the northwest side of a mountain with grass on top. Then u can't see it on dynam map
