I'm thinking instead of jail offenders just afk'ing their time away, maybe they should work their way to freedom. Maybe if we install 10-20 furnaces, supplied some coal...and had them smelt sand or cobble for the city....it would be a productive form of punishment.
I am prepared to donate at LEAST 50K blocks of sand for this effort.

Is there a way to disable their ability to gain xp while in jail? And for theft, can their inventory be cleared before they leave? Or better yet...its all about accountablity. They are issued 10 lava buckets....1000 blcks of sand, and to finish their service, they submit 1000 blocks of glass and 10 empty buckets.

I agree with Sasha and with Meat. With Sascha's idea, it helps out the server in a way that we can have more supplies ready for the projects at spawn (even though there is already A LOT of materials ready). Having a fine is also good because it will set the person back for some time. I think that both punishments should be involved, however they should be given for different crimes. What I mean by that is that if someone greifs or steals, they should have to smelt stuff or work; if they spam, curse, or don't listen to staff, they get fined. I understand the possible difficulty of this but its just my two cents.
It would also be cool if there was a plugin that would work with jail and residence that made people not gain xp and would empty their inventory when they leave. I'll be looking around for plugins like this and post one after the VeteranCraft is officially on a dedicated server.

I am in favor of whatever keeps staff from working more. It must be super annoying to constantly be taken away from your own projects and fun (keep in mind this is a game) to deal with the stupid people out there. I'd hate to be staff if I've got a babysit people or keep them in check. Jail them, they're muted, or ban them. Moving on.
Just my two shillings, but I think staff should be able to enjoy the game too and not have to do more work than is necessary. It isn't their real-life job, after all. They're just trying to be helpful players, and I wouldn't want to burden them more than is necessary.

You just summed up why I left the Minecraft Forums staff. It was hell. I'd spend all my time handling reports and couldn't enjoy the forum. And playing Minecraft when there were open reports felt like a dereliction of duty.
I heartily agree regarding these penalties. It does need to be automatic, though. A mod just needs to say "/jail LightWarriorK griefing" and I am instantly sent to prison with a time sentence and quota of stone to smelt before I'm allowed out, automatically by the server once both conditions are met. For "/jail LightWarriorK trolling," same thing but it's a time sentence and an appropriate fine.
