I believe one of your plugins already has this feature because when I tried using it as a simple test I received the message the red message "You do not have permission to use that command."  As the server becomes more popular and you add more people there are going to be people who kind of rub each other the wrong way and the best way to avoid saying anything offensive is to ignore them.  I have tried playing with the limited chat option the game itself offers but its basically either, you can see chat but not type, or you cannot see any chat at all which is peaceful but there could be an important message from staff you are missing, plus you also can't use any chat commands like /home.  The issue with allowing people to ignore is of course setting it so that people can't place staff on ignore.  I don't know if the plugins currently use would allow for that sort of configuration or if it would require adding a plugin like Hero Chat to make that possible.  I hope making this suggestion does not offend anyone, I really like the server and I am enjoying playing with people that are usually on when I am.  If we had chat channels I would probably be asking for an option to leave all channels except server alerts/messages.  Then people can still message you privately and you have access to using your chat commands for healing and home, but you avoid the walls of rapidly scrolling text that happen with 20+ people on.  Thanks for reading and considering.

Extended channels, outside of mcMMO party chat, are a consideration in an upcoming release of our chat/community plugin to some degree. However, that all depends on when - or should I say if - Mojang actually releases its Client API. For now, our general policies have served us well.

While ignoring players would bring immediate satisfaction to some, it only treats the effect, not the cause. Staff and the community as a whole should have no reservation to remind those having extended private conversions in chat to take it to party. Though it is easier to ignore than to convince the ignorant to be more socially responsible, the latter has better long-term benefits for all.

Think the goal for the client API was what, official release?  That was only a year ago.... Frustrating they still basically just have 2 coders working on the pc version of the game.  Maybe my addendum to the policy should of been a suggestion of not discussing religion/politics in public chat but I assumed that fell under the common sense line.  Unfortunately that has not been the case and it can be challenging not to respond when it happens fairly often.  Trying to convince the ignorant to be more socially responsible in my experience tends to just lead to fruitless drama that I wish to avoid as much as possible.  I read alot of the news on various sites, I am active in politics in my own area, when I am on minecraft multiplayer though its to unwind and have fun building, being creative, trading, even some good natured conversation.

If you ever feel a discussion in the global chat is something more befitting a private channel, you may be best off attempting to resolve that between yourself and the offending party. It is hoped that we would not have to limit the topics that can be discussed in the global chat, so long as everyone involved can conduct themselves in a mature and civil manner.

While we do have many younger players, our player base tends to be an older more mature crowd. I would hope as a community we could discourage immature replies/retorts towards one another and maintain the integrity of the chat without resorting to censoring anything "hot button".

We try to ensure there is always a member of staff on-line, however it isn't something we can guarantee. If things do cross the line, and a conversation degrades into an exchange of insults and accusations - you're free to contact a member of staff via the forums or for the sake of anonymity you're free to use the private message system also located on the forums.

Although I think divergence from the main chat would lead to less of a close nit community, I would have to agree that a system that allows for multiple rooms and the ability to not see the main chat would be wonderful, and although I do not personally feel it is productive or kind to call members of our community ignorant or belittle them publicly because of my distaste for the conversations they carry, I understand and agree with Wally's statements, and would love to see something new go into effect. As we grow, we are going to see different types of people who have different interests enter into our community, and it would be nice to offer the option for people with similar tastes to join group chats and speak freely about the things they enjoy, without a constant bombardment of things they don't (:

I suggest you re-read and understand the context in which Wally and I use the term "ignorant". We could have used "lack of awareness", "uneducated", "unsophisticated", "lacking knowledge", or a half-a-dozen other adjectives that don't sum it up as concisely. Also understand that community membership isn't automatically bestowed upon players by virtue of logging on - just ask any of the 650+ players on our ban list. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that 90% of them were ignorant in some sense or another.

When I mentioned the Veteran Craft community, I should have been more specific and noted that I was speaking only of our long term player base, not those fleeting or otherwise unwelcome. This being said, I assumed that when discussing chat options, the people in mind would be day to day players, so while I was reading the suggestion and your response, I automatically assumed we were speaking about the same people. I now understand how you intended the word ignorant to be taken.
