I think it would be fun if the ender dragon showed up more often or even by appointment perhaps. I realize some people dislike the idea making this mechanic more accessible than it currently it is in part because they think their past fun is somehow damaged by other people having fun or are concerned about the market price of eggs. Personally i am utilitarian and maybe a bit hedonistic in my approach to this because I recognize that it is cool to do stuff like this with friends and do not think any thought should be given market prices or a tradition of making such experiences a lottery.

The cool thing is this experience could be provided to everyone whenever they fancy by rigging up command blocks to automate what is currently something staff need to bother with. The sheer amount of customization that could be thrown in as well is worth talking about i think.

If staff don't want to extra work of writing the command blocks I am happy write them and post or pm the text which would be needed to accomplish this. Further i realize certain members of staff have well thought out opinions on this whole thing as well being the active members they are i only ask that this thread not be locked so as to prevent the free exchange of ideas.

Thanks for your time I really appreciate that you took the time to read this.

It is more than just taking past fun away from those who killed the dragon in the past, as I tried to explain in-game.

The killing of the Ender Dragon is a "special event."  If you were playing in SSP, you'd only be able to do it once per map, as the Dragon doesn't naturally regenerate.  It's meant to be "end game," not just something to do for fun.

VeteranCraft established the Dragon as a "special event" that would not be offered all the time.  If it were available all the time, it wouldn't be special.  We want to keep it special, and to NOT be just "ho hum, since we're bored, lets go kill the dragon again."

For me, at least, the market value of the egg is not a factor.  It's only priced high because it is rare, and most people don't sell their eggs, nor would want to buy them.  I would never dream of buying someone else's trophy, nor would ever sell one.

And yes, we don't want so many eggs out there that the trophies become worthless, and I'm not talking about market value.

It's an aspect of VeteranCraft: the Dragon is a "special event," and that is not going to change....at least not as long as I have any say in the matter, and I'm not alone on this.  We WANT players to look back and say, "Hey, remember when I killed the Dragon? That was epic!" or "Wow, I hope I get to kill the Dragon someday....I'd love to have an egg on VC."  We do NOT want to hear, "Wanna go kill the Dragon?" "Nah, that's boring, I did it yesterday."

As for showing up by appointment, that will never happen except for as an Event.  We had one of those after Arda opened, and even then it was spur of the moment and not planned in advance.

Lastly, there will never, EVER be Command Blocks on VeteranCraft.  Command Blocks completely break servers, and not even staff has access to them, they're that dangerous.  Even when working properly, they're little more than cheat-blocks in SMP.  All coding is done in the back-end server by frelling, who actually knows what he's doing and won't break things.

I agree with LightWarriorK, this aspect of the game would be ruined if it occurred on command or even very often.  However, it would be nice if we could slay the Dragon more often, or even on a predetermined schedule.  I'm not suggesting that we do it every Tuesday (like Destiny, because that IS very boring), but biannually would be great.

Apologies if we already do it this often, but my ignorance brings up another point.  It would be great if the regeneration of the End were better announced, maybe make it a weekend event.  Because, I can only guess how many times the Dragon has been slain since I joined VC 2 years ago.  My best guess would be the number of times we got a newly generated secondary world, SR and OR.  I know that generation of a new secondary world is announced, but I don't really know how it affects the End.

When a new secondary world is generated, there is often an overlap that can last over a month were both Seraphs Realm and the Outer Reaches are accessible.  When does the End regenerate?  Is it when the new world is generated, when the old world is removed, or sometime between the two?  Is the newly generated End accessible though both portals in the secondary worlds or does each world have it's own End?

I don't mean to badger staff with a bunch of questions, but the wiki doesn't seem to be clear about any of these questions, and their answers would be very helpful to anyone looking to slay the Dragon.

Respectfully,

Apologies, the wiki does seem to answer the point to which my circle of questions lead.  When can we expect to be able to fight a Dragon?  According to the wiki

our policy will be to reset the End once per week on Wednesday at midnight (EST).

I don't believe that this is the case, but it is what the Veteran Craft Wiki states.

Respectfully,

It's done manually and not on a schedule.  It will usually be done when we update, especially if there are updates to the End, but not always.

Is the newly generated End accessible though both portals in the secondary worlds or does each world have it's own End?

There is only one End, and any End portal will go to it.  If the End is reset, the portals in the secondary world don't change.

The Wiki is terribly, terribly out of date, and shouldn't be relied upon as a source of accurate information.  As to what the wiki states as to when a reset will occur, that was written three years ago yesterday, according to the history.  I didn't join until a few months later in June of 2012, and if that policy was ever implemented, it didn't survive long.  Random and sporadic resets was the way of it when I joined, so it is like it has been for at least the last 2 years and 8 months or so.  I never even met the user/mod who wrote that page, Mswiercz.

Thanks for the discussion, guys, and keep it going. :)

My view on this is that the way it works is fine. In my opinion, even if the number of resets was the same, if they were better announced it would ruin it. If it were announced the end was being reset, people who hardly play on the server might come on just to kill it, and take the fun away from people who are on VC a lot. Then, the egg would sit in a chest collecting dust. Special things like killing the dragon are deserved by people who are dedicated to VC and its community. If anyone wanted to kill the dragon just for the fun of it, there is nothing stopping them from doing it in SP or another server where the ender dragon is spawned a lot. Veterancrafts ideology prevents abuse of features and items, and constantly spawning in dragons, resulting in mass amounts of xp and dragon eggs, would ruin that. Plus, there is a lot to be said for unexpected end raids. They're exciting, and predetermined, excessive spawnings wouldn't add to the fun. The fact that the end is reset at all is pretty generous in my opinion.

The only reason we are able to say it is a special event is apparently because the way the end is operated changed from being reset quite often to allow the sort of experience I would prefer to see, into a sort of lottery so as to artificially make this mechanic scarce on the server.

It seems the rules in the end regarding PvP and loot are as they are in order to make the mechanic more dynamic with players able to either cooperate with one another or compete with each other. I would guess as things currently are the end itself is rarely used by players. I feel that more people would have more fun if things went back to the original system.

Though I do agree if you decide to do the same thing many times you as a individual are likely to get bored of it but this is really no reason to make it effectively unavailable to people who have not had the opportunity to play with the mechanic on the server as frequently as the hypothetical individual.
