As I am sure everyone has noticed, our server is growing more and more each day, and as a result, we are joining forces with a large array of different types of people and personalities. It seems that although our rule regarding Language and Racism was fitting for the time in which it was written, We now have multiple interpretations of said rule, due to the relaxed writing style used to construct it. So I suggest we split the rule into two more detailed versions of it's former self.

1. Discrimination against race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, sexual identity, national origin, age, or disability will not be tolerated.  Although we understand that some people will view themselves as able to say certain things because of their own background, we do not allow that here.

2. No Excessive bad language in the public chat. We ask that you refrain from using some of the more offensive words and terms publicly, as it may upset some of the other people in our community. If you are consufed as to which words you should avoid and in which setting you should avoid using them, please inquire with a staff member.

I agree with this. The no excessive bad language rule definitely needs a fix. I've seen some people try to go a little over excessive but still say that they aren't using bad language excessively. However, I have also seen some people complain over a single usage of bad language from someone who almost never uses it.

I have awesome shoulders.

Well put, Toot. I support this endeavor.

I told the doctor I broke my leg in two places. He told me to stop going to those places.

I think this will certainly bridge the gap between what is literally stated and what is done in-game. I support.

I have to agree with this point. "Excessive" is a very subjective term by nature, because everybody's definition is different depending on how much they tolerate language. I myself will cuss like a sailor if you let me and have no problem with any cuss word under the sun, unless it's a racial slur or is directed at others. To me, the biggest determinant is the direction the language is heading - I've often said before, there's a big difference between saying 'f this' and saying 'f you'. As long as people aren't cussing AT each other, I don't have a problem with it.

Then again, I'm also a very tolerant individual in that regard - but for the sake of others who aren't, I keep my potty mouth in check.

I really think the best rule of thumb, considering how differently everyone views language, is to just stop if you've said something and someone else spoke up about it, but otherwise don't stress about it. Seems the most common sense approach anyway....

While I wish the masses had 'common sense' and could self govern in this regard, I do see that we have hundreds of players, and any time you throw a ton of people together, some of them don't see the same way.

The purpose for the bad language rule is to make this a both friendly and respectful environment, but also quite frankly a 'family friendly' environment. Not only because some kids play here (ie. Bonzai728's young son), but also because some people are offended by bad language. I added the word 'excessive' because to be honest, I don't think it's that offensive for someone to slip a 'damn' or 'hell' out from time to time, but I guess to simplify things, we should just say 'no bad language in the public chat'. While we don't market ourselves to kids, we also don't want to be associated with a server where a mother would be appalled if she saw what was said in front of her kids. Make sense? Any other server you go on there's plenty of ignoramus cussing, racism and sexism just like if you're on XBox live. We're trying to provide an alternative gaming experience to the adolescent primate mentality.

I'll make the necessary changes.

I've modified the rule into 2 different clearer rules:

  1. No Bad Language in Public Chat
If you can't say it in front of your grandmother or the Pope, keep your mouth shut. If you are wondering if a certain word is on a list, just don't say it. VeteranCraft provides an alternative to the adolescent primate mentality that is too frequent in online gaming.
  2. No Discrimination
Discrimination against race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, sexual identity, national origin, age, or disability will not be tolerated.  Although we understand that some people will view themselves as able to say certain things because of their own background, we do not allow that here.

I am happy so many of you agree, and I am excited for the rule changes. I feel that although cursing is associated with adult behavior, it is anything but mature, and the mature are who we market to. It is unfortunate that censorship has to take place, but it seems like a small price to pay for the sake of the younger members of the VeteranCraft community and those who dislike such language. Yay progress! (:
