Minecraft version 1.9 seems to be released coming up with a bunch of new features and a bunch of work for our techs. As the experience shows, it usually takes weeks to months for our server to update to the latest MC version which is natural as updating all the plugins and fixing all the issues is simply time-consuming and our techs do also have a real life. However, I fear that we loose a lot of good players in these periods between release of a new version and update of the server, because they want to discover the new features, maybe join other servers, forget to join VC for a month and thus loose all their stats and proprietary.

In the past, we sometimes had an additional vanilla server on the latest version, however my impression is that these weren't used very much, maybe because they didn't really offer any Veterancraft. You had to start from the very beginning again with nothing but your bare hands in a wide, wild, untouched world. So, besides some VC friends who occasionally joined, these temporary servers weren't more attractive than an own new singleplayer world (in my opinion).

My idea for 1.9 is to set up a very small world, 1000 x 1000 blocks at the most, being basically a tiny island in the wide ocean. It could already contain some structures (made by WorldEdit e.g.) and supplies, so that players don't have to start from the very beginning (yes, VC is legit; just consider that these structures/supplies are left-overs from an ancient civilisation which lived on this island long time before we discovered it čśë ). The spawn could be an expedition ship (which is maybe even a wreck) from where you have to swim 50 to 200 meters to the island.

As the most important changes in 1.9 concern The End, this island must have a stronghold with an End portal. And because the island is small and resources are rare, players will more likely cooperate which is even necessary in order to activate the End portal, to kill the dragon, to discover new End islands etc. There could be also two competing teams to strenghten the cooperation within each team.

In short: Why not make this period between 1.9 release and server update a long-term event; goal: team up and discover The End? This would allow players to discover the 1.9 features and to stay tied to the server. The vanilla world could be set up quite easily. Of course, it would be the most convenient to join the world from Arda, but I'm not sure, if that is possible. Even if it's possible, you won't be able to transfer items from one world into the other for apparent reason.

Summary: The suggestion is to set up a small vanilla world (1000x1000 meters at the most) until the server update to 1.9. There, players can discover 1.9 features in cooperation, especially The End. Overall, this would be more like a long event than a singleplayer-like world maintained by VC.

And that is exactly the plan!!! Great minds think alike Laugh

There were a lot of end-of-month activities at work that prevented me from giving this my full attention until now. Spigot is already 1.9 capable (woot!!!) and preliminary tests show it to be stable. Provided nothing else gets in my way, I will be opening up a 1.9 world or "island" sometime tomorrow night.

It is a perfect opportunity to give Spigot 1.9 a whirl and let us test some basic plugins. I will see what I can do with "seeding" the world with items. If our Essentials tests work, we can set up kits that will at least allow players to get some armor, weapons, and basic materials. More on that, when I know more...
