As usual, we're running into the problem with some of our players "accidentally" upgrading to the latest and greatest version of Minecraft, effectively making their client incompatible with Veterancraft.

Unfortunately, it also seems harder to find older versions of Minecraft on the net, since Mojang has been cracking down on such archive sites (technically, Mojang is the only authorized distributor of Minecraft). Sadly, Mojang itself doesn't provide a means for downloading older version.

If you know a little about Windows and are comfortable with some basic file manipulation, I have put the techniques that I use to run multiple versions of Minecraft on the Wiki. This is not going to solve the problem of finding an older version, but instead shows you an example of how you can maintain older versions from hereon forward.

If it will not get me into trouble, I'm more then happy to share my .minecraft folder. I don't play single player, texture packs, or mods, and I know it works because I accidentally upgraded myself. My only worry is that I've heard something about a file that tracks my "last login" or something. I own a domain name I can upload it too if need be.

Just let me know.

Anthony

@Emulated

It is entirely up to individuals should they want to make private arrangements for exchanging older versions of Minecraft with each other.

However, this should not be construed as an endorsement by Veterancraft to do so. Nor will Veterancraft act as an agent for such exchanges. Any information and/or links posted in Veterancraft's public forums will be promptly removed.

Oh, does this violate a term of use or something along those lines? (For Minecraft)

Simply put, Mojang retains all copyrights, including distribution rights, to the game software. Technically, it would be illegal for Veterancraft to have its own repository of older versions that players could download. While not as serious, even having links to older versions elsewhere could be considered aiding an infringement.

I know that most ppl don't give a rats-ass about this :) and will just copy stuff till hell freezes over or the FBI comes a-knocking :) However, as a software author I have a higher sensitivity toward such matters.

easiest way is just to make a copy of the minecraft.jar file inside the bin folder and rename it to the version that it is and change betwin the versions when its needed to :) realy no need to make a full backup on hole minecraft folder :)

It may be the easiest way, but not the most reliable way, particularly if someone does swap regularly between servers running different versions. The minecraft.jar is not the only thing that can change during an upgrade and if you're running mods, well... its your game.

Unless someone has a couple of huge single player worlds, creating a copy of .minecraft is no more difficult than making a copy of minecraft.jar. Add a small batch file and you never have to swap things around. It become a matter of double-clicking the right icon, rather than having to fret moving different versions of minecraft.jar back into the bin directory.

We try recommend the right way, rather than just a quick fix. Hum, what does my signature say again?

I hear of something called Spoutcraft, which someone I know used to connect to the server while he has 1.2. Of course he had to configure it to actually allow him to read the signs, but still..

Since SpoutCraft is a client mod, it can allow a user to change their protocol version number to look like a 1.1 client. The problem is that if the protocol changes are too drastic, it can spell problems for both the client and server unless the server has the corresponding Spout plugin to act as the interface.
