Greetings staff of VC,
I have posted a topic about a new portal ship, and I wanted to make a copy of my current balloon. Because I lacked the motivation for just brainless copying I started looking for an alternative to my balloon, sadly the only one I could find is the blimp design, and I dont feel that one either.
So I went over to the portal ship page on the website and it states the following:
Air Ships
- Designs must fit within the 61x25x50 or 25x25x50 plots (Length, Width, Height)
- Designs must have helium/hydrogen balloonet and gondola or basket
- Designs must be conventional and convincing
- Designs are to be no more modern than the 1800s.
- Designs must be approved.
I would like to talk about the fourth rule: "Designs are to be no more modern than the 1800s."
In my previous topic I requested a portal ship from my place to greens place (new market) and vice versa. But after reading the fourth rule I started wondering if those rules would also apply to airships that do not dock at Exodus. I figured it could be possible, since I could also build a high tech city which probably shouldnt have a pre 1800 airship, but probably something more modern.
To wrap it all up: I was wondering if the same rules apply to (air)ships that do not dock at exodus.
Just to make clear, I am not trying to provoke the rules here, I am interested in exploring my options before I start building a new airship.
Thanks for reading and I appreciate all the time anyone has and will spend on helping me with this subject!

PS. In my city I would like a magical balloon, it could be something like in the picture below. The balloon probably will be either raindrop shaped, or be a sphere that is held down by a cloth carpet thing like in my existing baloon.

Ted-
I hope I can help, as I'm going to be throwing a good bit of stuff at you here.
You are correct that the 1800's rule only applies to ships or airships going to and from Exodus.
However, they must still comply with the other rules, especially the one about being "conventional and convincing."
Now, we've never had a request like what you just posted, so I'd have to talk it over with other staff, but in general we try to keep the airships looking like something that would stay afloat. A large enough balloon, an appropriate gondola. "Flight worthy." That's the main goal with these things. There has to be a line somewhere, and I don't know yet where this would fall.

Adml-
Neither of those vessels would be suitable for Exodus. The Helicopter would be possible otherwise if it has a landing platform, and the airplane would be feasible with a runway.
One of the reasons why we encourage hot air balloons and zeppelin-sytle airships is that they require very little infrastructure, and can be docked floating pretty much anywhere. Neither of these could do so, and would require their appropriate landing areas to be considered "air-worthy" enough to be approved for portals.
Ted-
Forgive me, this thread slipped my mind. If you still wish to pursue this idea, let me know and we'll discuss it among staff.

Awesome to know.. Yeah. for Exodus I knew it had to be 1800s but didn't know if that applied to other areas. I was thinking about an airfield if I wanted to do an airplane so good to know that may be a possible option (e.g. an airport)
For the chopper I was thinking of a helipad at the dock but considering that hot air balloons and choppers don't mix I'll scrap that idea for another day and go with a balloon for now

No worries Keith, I forgot all about it myself aswell. I am not planning on building that balloon anymore!
I do have a question about airships in general;
Can we build an airship (for example the plane or chopper in AdmlAdama's pictures) and have it setup as a portal ship, if it leads from/to anywhere but exodus?

Yes, so long as they are "air-worthy," airships do not have to go to Exodus, but can go to-from anywhere.
The standard of 1800's Balloon or Airship is for Exodus only. So long as there is appropriate infrastructure for the ship (dock, platform, runway, etc.) it'll be considered.
