The buy-out was just an escape, the only option on the table to get away from it. I found the most interesting point in the article was that he didn't know how to say goodbye the people at Mojang. So, he just walked out and left it behind.
Look at the indie dev who made Flappy Bird. The unwanted attention he gained from the $50k per day in ad revenue... the comments on Twitter... Easy to see why you would walk away from it.

As much as I would like to be a Notch fanboy, the symptoms are classic. Doesn't want to share the sandbox and wonders why no one wants to play with him. So... sell the sandbox.
