"Yggdrasill shivers, the ash, as it stands. The old tree groans, and the giant slips free." -Voluspa

I am starting to make progress on my side project, the planting of a "World Tree."  I'm naming it Yggdrasil, in the Norse tradition, since the name is more consistent with ancient Highmoorian naming archetypes than others.  However it will not be Norse in construction, but focusing more on New Age and shamanistic/monastic cultural attributes

For a long time now, I've had the basic Residence in place, along with a planted "sapling," here.  The plans for Yggdrasil include a massive undergound cavern, which I've been using as Highmoor's quarry.  Right now, it has a tree farm for gathering spruce logs for use in the growing of the tree.

Plans for the tree include three parts.  The island you see here will be used for temples and gardens of various types.  The goal is for it to be contemplative and serene.  The first part will be the complex around the base of the tree and about the island, including docks for portal ships (at the least, one from Highmoor).  There will also be a road connecting to the mainland, however that mainland is such a jumbled mess right now that I probably won't take it past that point.

The second part is the tree itself, which will extend up to 256y, or close enough to it not to matter.  There will, of course, be some structures in the branches.  The canopy is planned to cover a full 200x200 Res Area, so most of the island will eventually be in shade.

The third part will be underground, among the roots, and contain the mechanisms to capitalize on the might and power of a World Tree.

Progress on Yggdrasil will depend on my ability to Res it, same as was with Highmoor.  Right now, I have control over the majority of the island surface, but not all, and not much above or below.  The cavern has many light holes on the surface, and so for the time being the entire Res is move-falsed to keep those without /god from falling into it and dying.  There have been many.  Since I started digging, there has also been a very large number of folks who have dug into the cavern for easy plunder of its resources, so there are boundary walls belowground.  The plan is to open it up for visitors as soon as the it is safe enough for visitors and the build.

The Plan for Completion has no timeline, as I primarily work on this when I'm on a mental block with Highmoor, but here are the steps I plan to take:

  • Main Trunk Base - 90% complete (to be finished with the lateral roots)
  • Vertical Tap Roots - 50% complete (to be finished with the Rock Temple)
  • Lateral Surface Roots - Up next
  • Tree "Growth" - as vertical Res can allow
  • Wood Temple (Surface)
    • Plaza (circular outline on the Dynmap)
    • Cloister
    • Gardens
    • Docks
  • Wind Temple (Tree)
    • Paths up the Tree
    • Heart Core
    • Outlying Pavilions
    • My Treehouse
  • Rock Temple (Cavern)
    • MerKaBa Generator
    • Energy capture mechanisms
    • Geothermal Regulators

I will keep this thread updated on the progress.  Please don't ask for help with this, like Highmoor it is a private project for which I desire sole responsibility.

I actually ran into this last night when I was wandering. I was a little annoyed that I couldn't enter the area, but now that I know why I don't mind. It's going very well so far, keep it up!

Yeah, sorry about that, Zakur.  I've lost track of the times I've found piles of goods left by folks who fell into the cavern.

In any case, tonight's work, and a sample of things to come, here's the "western larteral root cluster."  Three more to go, but this one was the largest.

And.....yes, one of the goals of this project is to show how to do a giant tree right. Cool

That's incredible. Can't wait to see it complete.

Thanks meat!  It's coming along well, I'm putting a lot of time and effort into it at the moment.  The lateral roots are coming along well, except for when I need to stop to gather logs.  My Woodcutting skill has jumped 200 levels since I started this. Laugh

It may take a long time to get to completion, but it's really satisfying to do it right and have the detail in there.

If you decide to give the ol' axe a break, you know where to purchase logs cheap.

Thanks Tony!  I'm sort of "Old Wealth" right now....land rich and cash poor.  I'm below my reserve funds at the moment, but I will keep Vetra Logs in mind. :)
