Overview
VCU President Frelling has announced that the university Board of Directors has approved a design contest for VCU’s Founder’s Monument. The contest is open to all Vetronians. For more information see the Contest Rules below.
Any inquires, questions, or comments regarding this contest shall be posted to this thread. In-game questions will be promptly ignored.
CONTEST RULES
Overview
VCU is in need of a Founder’s Monument to commemorate its founders, builders, and contributors. Many Vetronians and old world immigrants came together to build these halls of learning. They foraged the land for materials, opened their purses, and spent countless days placing block by block, slab by slab, brick by brick. VCU needs a monument to honor these people for their hard work and generosity.
Selection & Prize
VCU President Frelling will make the final selection with input from owner and staffers. If none of the designs are found suitable, no selection may be made; and, the contest period may be extended or postponed.
Up to three designs may be selected as follows:
- First Place - 10,000 Shillings
- 1st Runner Up - 5,000 Shillings
- 2nd Runner Up - 2,500 Shillings
Eligibility
The contest is open to all Vetronians – new and old.

Brought this one back up in game so there prolly will be a few participants soon. =) A tiny clarification request though: The minimum 4 high, does that apply to the base or just the entire monument?

Unfortunately that still doesn't make it clear to me, which is why I asked. Nevertheless, my base is 4 high so fortunately that's not a problem to me.
"The monument shall not have a base larger than 5 x 5 blocks and [the monument] shall be at least 4 blocks high. It is preferred that the base be circular in nature."
Or

Concept: The monument exists of 5 components:
- First is the foundation of sandstone, with in it 4 cubes of coloured wool. The colours are the same as those of the four wind directions in the Vetropolis railstation, representing the entire world and the players in it. In other words, the foundation of VCU is the community of the server, none excluded.
- The iron tree is rooted into the sandstone and the wool. This stands for how VCU was supported by the entire community and is a part of the community still.
- The first layer of pedestals displays four of the basic building blocks used in VCU and Vetropolis. Ordinary, but important. It represents the need to have a solid foundation in any big project, a foundation VCU clearly has.
- The second layer of pedestals displays four more fancy blocktypes. After one has a solid foundation, only then can one turn it into something special that shines.
- Finally on top is a diamond block. Because no matter what materials you use, anything you start with is a rough unpolished gem. But in the end, that no longer is the case. After all that hard work and support, what was made is now a truly polished diamond and a beacon in this world.

OkariM:
All I can say is that the specifications were written as clearly as possible. English as a second language can be difficult, but as it is my second language, I am also aware of grammatical innuendos and have worded it accordingly. The difference between both interpretations relies on the use of a semicolon. All I can say is, do your best in interpretation, and hope its right.
If this is not to your liking, then I hope you never endeavor in a field in which RFPs (requests for proposals) are a norm.
If the above sounds a bit standoff-ish, I'm sorry. I've put 10K of my own to drive community efforts and made every conceivable effort to ensure that the purpose and desires of the contest are explained. I've even ask a prudent non-MCer to read the original specifications, and no ambiguities were raised.

Here is my monument. The iron is the strong base, this resembles the strength of this server (as in teamwork, no lag, and all legit). The lapiz is for creativity, the buildings on this server including VCU are amazing and so well built. The netherrack and fire on this shows how sometimes this server can be hellish but still is awesome. The coordinates for this are x: -351 y: 66.

Due to the recent problems with disconnects/lag, the overall VCU project, including the contest, has had to be put on the back burner. Given that, the contest deadline has been extended to midnight, November 22, 2011, EST.

Thanks for the reminder Spent. Obviously, with all the migration and host issues things such as the contest had to take a backseat.
Tentatively, the contest is still open and I will shoot for for a closing date sometime around mid-December, but I will keep that open for now. In addition, due to the delays, I will double the prize monies.

Hello! This is H8crew's and my entry for the VCU Founders Monument Design Contest!
Co-ordinates:
x: -1283
z: -1765
Size:
Base is a 5x5 circle
Total width is 7 blocks (at top)
Height is 12 (including the base)
Here are the images of our monument:
Materials include:
- Book shelves
- Glowstone
- Iron Blocks
- Gold Blocks
- Diamond Blocks
- Stone Bricks
- Signs
There are two different possibilities for the signs as shown in the images above. We also took screen shots in two different texture packs, John Smith 1.0.0 & Default.
We took the letters "VCU" and incorporated it into this monument and chose the above materials because they represent the hard work and determination it took to build the University from the ground up. It also takes a long time to build and maintain a server of this caliber, and we chose these materials specifically to honour all the hard work that has gone into this server. Also we chose the bookshelves for the base of the monument because it seemed fitting being as it's a University, and the glowstone was chosen to illuminate the monument at night time.
The design is not obtrusive as you can see through it, and will not block the wonderful architecture of the University. I think it will be easy to implement our simple yet elegant monument into the University's courtyard.
Please contact either H8crew or LIKEABAOWSS in regards to this monument. Thank you very much, and good luck to all contestants!

Yes, if anyone has any new designs, please feel free to submit. I will try to finalize a selection after I get done with this round of updates and fixes. I'm not sure when that will be, as I need to revisit the whole plans for VCU itself. It been a looong couple of months with these constant updates and higher priority items.
