Once upon a time on some distant past server, I had the idea to build a massive cathedral. So I journeyed out twelve thousand blocks until I finally found a large flat surface where I could begin building. After about a week into the construction, the server's owner started to go crazy and eventually everything that I had ever worked for on that server was lost. Now I seek to construct a Cathedral on the same grandeur, but bigger and better.
The original dimensions were roughly 40x80 (If I remember correctly). The new design that I am currently working on... Well, it kind of kicks the front door over the old one in terms of both size and prestige.

This is an early pic of the design's layout, before I realized I had to extend the neck to match the height in proportionality.

Second picture is the current design. I have yet to get to the actual filling part, I was hoping that I could get SPC so I could use WorldEdit to speed through the designing process, but SPC may have been discontinued... Either way, I will work more on this Thursday and into the weekend. Final dimensions of this design? 81 by (roughly, as I did not measure once I extended the neck) 150-170. Height is currently measured at 79, will probably go taller.
Feedback is necessary, as I still am not sure of what material to actually make it out of.

i think this would be a wonderful addition to the server. this itself would warrent a portal ship/airship to it, and it is nice to see so more of these massive buildings as opposed to the towns we all build. if you need any help, you have my bow! (and materials =P)

Dear Lord, that is a massive structure!
It looks like you have made a good start of it, and there are some fine architectural forms there, but at 81x150x79 that's like 10x the size of the Archives, which isn't small. If this is going in Vetropolis, where would it fit? And would a height of 79 place it above the height of the Bell Tower?
I really like where you're headed with this, but maybe the design could be scaled back (as in actually scaling the dimensions)? meatbawllz would probably have the best idea for what sized plot it would need to fit into.
As for the materials, the classic Gothic Cathedral would be stone brick, with a tiled floor (maybe different sorts of lumber?). They also use stained-glass, but without having any in Minecraft, maybe used a triple-layered pane of glass? Glass-cloth-Glass, to simulate a stained-glass look. I'm sure other materials would work well, too. Working in some obsidian somewhere would be really cool.
Good luck!

Also, stay away from cobblestone and if you do touch on it, use very little. A wall of cobblestone looks very tacky, to me at least. When it comes to design I look to fool around with textures, colors and depth. If you have just a wall of one type block, the eyes and mind get bored and becomes unappealing to structure. You also don't want to overdue where it just becomes a mash up of everything. Just adding my 2 shillings

My world of cobblestone and wood takes offense!
Not so much offense as to do anything about it, but I fart in your general direction at the very least.

If it went in Vetropolis, we'll have to wait until the land reclamation project (*north) gets completed from a planning state, then a designated plot would be assigned. It would have to fit into the designated plot, not the other way around. Unfortunately until dynmap is back, we won't even be working on the land reclaimation.

Ooooor.. we can pray Jeb implements this idea:

I've been wanting a stained glass addition since I first started playing Minecraft back in the alpha days. That's the only reason I haven't built a huge church yet. I hope it gets added eventually, and that Kopaka gets to build his church, because gothic-style cathedrals are just incredible to me.

Okay, thank you guys SO much for the feedback, the idea really needs it!
As for the size/scalar problems, I foresaw this, and have thought about it through many different outcomes such as:
- Building this cathedral out in the wilderness and then a city around it. This would be very intriguing to me, as in my home town they built a church over on the outskirts. Now the church is pretty much the center of town.
- Scaling down the design; this is something I have already begun doing as a fallback approach.
- Building it at another city willing to provide the land. (Basically option 1 but somewhat backwards)
@ Dalferas, the Cobblestone you see is just me setting up a wire-frame so I can get a better idea of how to build it up with all of the details. I'm very aware not to use cobblestone for such a massive project (Although back when I was building the original Cathedral I was working primarily with Cobblestone.)
Materials: Stone brick is for sure going to be one of the primary materials. The roof, however, presents a bit more of a challenge. I was thinking obsidian or colored wool (Red or Blue preferably), but I'm looking into alternative materials. The floor will definitely be tiled in some form or fashion, the 'how' is what I'm still debating.
Stained Glass: YES YES YES YES YES. I've been hoping that every update will contain some implement of colored glass, and I continue to pray for it. In my anticipation for it I am thinking that I will set aside some possible materials for the windows, and just use glass plates for the time being. The Glass-Wool-Glass idea would be interesting, and I will experiment with that as a temporary replacement, but using that pattern would require that I keep the building scale rather large for the full effect.
Building Space in Vetropolis: I was very aware when I began this project that there would be very little room for something this massive in Vetropolis, having seen the size of some of the structures that are already there (And this Cathedral dwarfs all of them with the possible exception of the University). The likely outcome is me building this behemoth somewhere else.
I will post update screens later tonight as I have found some free time in my schedule to get to work on it again, and if anyone has an alternative tool to Single-Player-Commands+WorldEdit, throw it my way! It's still going to be tedious, but at least it will keep the designing phase from dragging out too long.
One final note: When I originally outlined the foundation, I was off by one block in the West wing -.-

Construction Continues, moving a bit slower than I'd hoped, but having classes from 6:00am to 5:30pm on weekdays tends to weigh most people down. Anywho, have some pics:

Another thing you could do to break up a wall is to put a tapestry or two if the stained glass idea doesn't work. Having been to about a dozen cathedrals in Europe I think that is somewhat accurate to what would be in an actual cathedral. Also a central point in the cathedral is common for a design detail that has a design in the floor and is meant to create an "awesome" effect. Also a small crypt somewhere in the cathedral or under the cathedral would be a nice detail. In the dome if you could do a design on the inside it could be like a painting on the top of the domes in Italy that were common. Just a few suggestions for later on I see a lot of promise in this project so keep it up!

Updating on the current plot dimensions and height:
Length: 156
Width: 101
Height: 105
Current Block count: 35,456
Tapestry: I'll definitely look into it.
Focal Point: There's going to be something like this, a hub. You can see it underneath the central Steeple.
Crypt/Underground: That will have to be designed later, the current "Superflat" terrain kind of prevents anything like that from being built atm.
Thanks for the input natees, much appreciated. Infectable, we will see. For now I must continue to toil with the design.

I have a progress update.
After getting back on track, and the recent release of 1.4.7, the Cathedral is back in my sights and progressing.
The structure is still growing, the residential volume for residencing has reached 151W x 173L x 113H.
Materials now include Redstone Blocks and Quartz. I've also been looking at alternatives to stained glass until something that can be used as such is added to the game.
