Hello wonderful Ardites (LWK told me this is what people from Arda are called so if you have a problem bring it up with him),
It has been a very long time, but the time is here...
FOR A BUILD OFF
You heard it right folks, we are going to be having a build off fairly soon. The date is still in the works so look at this thread once in a while for updates. The build off will be held over the course of two weeks so you'll have an entire week to build. The theme for this one is sea ships! Now before you go into your creative worlds to create your possibly winning design, let's go over a few base concepts and rules for your sea ships:
- Your ship must fit within the design requirements of a sailing ship. So long story short that means: a curved hull that permits buoyancy, sails that permit movement of the ship, and masts to hold these sails up.
- Your ships must fit within the general era of Arda. That means the ship must look like it belongs in the Age of Sail. The only exception to this rule are the boats in the small category. We will permit a more "Modern Recreational Sailboat" approach for these.
- Your ship's hull must comprise primarily of wood. Any blocks can be used as ornaments or for decorative purpose, but cannot be the predominant block of the water and near-water section of the ships. Boats with hulls that are not mainly wood shall be disqualified.
- Ships must be sea-worthy. They can't have holes in their hulls, the sails MUST be proportional to the ship size. Do not put a full course-sail to moon-sail arrangement on a small boat, and don't have a single masted large boat.
- Sails must be unfurled, and must look like they are sails. This means that designs with completely flat sails will be instantly rejected. They must also be made of wool.
That said, there will be three categories of ships: Small, Large, and Insane.
- Small: Ship cannot exceed 25 blocks in length, and 9 blocks in width. Height is limited to 32 blocks out of water (Y=62). Masts: 1 to 2
- Large: Ship must exceed 35 blocks in length, and 14 blocks in width. Ship cannot exceed 61 blocks in length, and 25 blocks in width. Height is limited to 75 blocks out of the water. Masts: 2 to 3
- Insane: Size exceeds 75 blocks in length, and 32 in width. Maximum size is on a logical stand point. Anyone who signs up under the insane category MUST give the approximate size of their ship
Ships will be judged by: Aesthetics, Size/Detail Ratio, Sea-Worthiness, Interior Decor, and Originality
- Aesthetics: Pretty self explanatory, the looks of the ship. Does it look good, is it an eyesore, et cetera, et cetera...
- Size/Detail Ratio: The smaller the ship, the more detail it needs for a balanced score in this category. A very large ship with a lot of detail will get the most out of this category.
- Sea-Worthiness: See the points above. All ships must pass this test to be eligible for the contest.
- Interior Decor: Your ship must look good on the insides too. While you don't need to put an excruciating amount of detail, more is always better.
- Originality: Points will be accorded to a ship that looks different... but it has to be good different. An original eyesore is still an eyesore.
Your judge and moderator of the event shall be:
THE FAMOUS LightWarriorK!
The event shall take place in the port city of Laufrey, which unsurprisingly is my city so yeah deal with it.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can my ship sails be colored?
A: Of course. Just keep in mind that sails must be made of wool.
Q: The hull must be wood, does that include logs?
A: You can use logs instead of planks if you want, but I highly recommend not only using Logs since their texture can be very hard to work with.
Q: Do I get bonus points for having my ship look exactly and fit the exact specifications of a boat from the Age of Sail, i.e. The British Navy?
A: No, Phil, you do not.
Q: Are any blocks banned from being used?
A: No, just remember that you cannot destroy your creation and recover your resources after the event is done, so I don't recommend building it out of Dragon Eggs and Beacons. I also do not recommend the use of sponge.
Q: What happens to my boat once the event is over?
A: If your ship was not disqualified, it will stay in the harbor of Laufrey until space must be allocated for something else. However, after the event, I will be offering a special deal to anyone wishing to connect their own build to Laufrey via the ship they just built: I will pay 30% of the Portal Ship setup cost (15k).
Q: Can I enter more than one boat?
A:Yes, but only one per size category. You cannot, however, win two size categories. (Example: if you have a ship in Small and Large, and win the prize for the Small Category, your Large ship is no eligible for the Large Category Prize.)
Q: Will there be a convenient location to purchase any resource we may need while building our ships that does not require us to go to a far far away market such as New Glacia or the New Market?
A: Yes, there will be a Laufreyan Empire shop set up near the build area, where you can purchase needed material. On that note, I will also rent out Shop spots near the build areas for any potential investors out there who want to make a buck or two.
It is essential that you sign up on this thread.

The answer you all been waiting for:
The winner of each category will receive 30,000.00 Shillings.
The Grand Winner will receive an extra 30,000.00 Shillings. Only the winners of each categories are eligible for this prize.
If a category has less than 3 participants, the prize of that category will instead be added to the Grand Winner prize pool, and the ships that were in said category will be eligible for the Grand Prize.
Example: If there are only two boats entered in the small category, the grand prize nominees shall be [Large Category Winner], [Insane Category Winner], [Small Boat 1], [Small Boat 2], and the grand prize will be 60,000.00 Shillings instead of 30,000.00

Hello I'm sure it's no surprise that I would be entering but I would like to throw my hat into the ring for this event I plan on building a ship of the large size cause as you can see the Caledonia class is way too much work for that short of time and frankly I don't have the recourses to pursue something like that on my own. however I am not sure of the vessel I want to create so for now I will just say it will be along the lines of a frigate. I would also like to ask if I could have mine turned into a portal ship after wards most likely as a portal to my trading city of Port Lancashire.
so to clarify I am planning on a ship of the of the large class
and it will range from proabably 64-50 blocks in length
Oh yeah and one more thing snow I never asked for bonus points related to accuracy but I do pride myself on accurate depictions. I am a very detailed painter and I very much enjoy creating ships that and designs that portray the things they are based on as accurately as possible both in actual painting and in minecraft.

I wish you all good luck with this.I'd participate but all my ship designs have been based on ones I bought from others so I would not feel as if I were truly developing my own ship.
So long as they aren't direct copies and you are just inspiring yourself off a previous design, it's all good!

When will this contest be official? Not one to rush, but I'd really like to start and see at least one of my builds get finished on this server.

Not sure if you check the forums very often or not but I would like to ask if you could at least hold of until I have finished the main mast of the man o war so that way I at least it won't be an eyesore to the competition. Also I need you to extend the claim out ward on the left side of the ship cause the side sails for the ship require more space than the current width of the claim.

Attn Ship Builders:
Traitor Joe's has temporarily been moved from New Glacia to the port of Laufrey to serve all of the hard working Ardites participating in the ship building competition. With prices already competitive with all other New Glacia and New Market shops, and logs, wool, and dyes added daily, you won't have to go far to get everything you need to build a legendary ship.
