I would like to suggest that as a community project, we build another starting area for new players. Our current mineshaft look just isn't cutting it, and isn't really giving new players a good grasp of our abilities here on VeteranCraft. My suggestion would be that we provide a VeteranCraft Lore fitting experience for new players as follows.

[takes place in a maze near bedrock in the south-east Ocean to capitalize on the void effect]

Prospective Veterans gain conciousness in a "dream". They're informed via signs they've dozed off in their bunk sailing to a new land. Some form of dark magic has ensnared their subconscious  and they must complete trials in their dream world before they can "wake". They follow the tunnel and come across trails of wit that test their mettle against our various rules. They may come across a lone post asking what denotes staff in-game. If they follow the path that says a suffix in square brackets, they come across the next trial - however if they take the path that says staff have the prefix [Ambassador] (among other choices) they're led to a long dead end. Other trials would touch on our build rules, donor ranks, and chat rules.

Once these players correctly answer the questions laid out before them, they work their way upwards escaping the void and the dark magic that binds them. Eventually they enter a broken fragment of what appears to be a small bedroom. There they find a bed that tells them they're weary once again, and must rest before they can re-enter the waking world.

Not sure if it's possible, but it would be super cool if we could have it so they're teleported by sleeping, if not perhaps have the bed in a multiverse portal.

[takes place on a tall ship in the south-eastern Ocean]

Once the player "awakens" they find themselves in the very same bedroom, but now they're in the waking world aboard the VNS Albatross, the ship that will take them to their new home. They traverse the ship and are forced to enter various cabins that explain Residence, JCShops, and possibly McMMO and the like. Finally the player breaches the deck and finds themselves mid-journey in the middle of the south-eastern Ocean. They would find their way to the front of the ship where the last lesson explained would be the use of our portal ships and how to use the teleport dias.

Once they're house trained and ready, they're finally allowed access to the rest of Vetronia and attached worlds.

Notes:

- To ensure new players cannot leave the new player area, we would need some creative Residencing to happen. It wouldn't be that difficult to place a barrier of -move subzones around the site.

- This would allow us to preform some basic renovations in Vetropolis without disturbing the flow of new players.

Well, that's my suggestion. I'm more then open to additions and comments both positive and critical, just keep it constructive. I'm looking for a lot of feedback.

i love the Lore part of where your heading Emu pluse the idea of them having some kind of trial before being able to play on VC. It would sort out the players that really want to be here and get rid of the hobo's that want a quick fix. To me VC has always been more than just playing minecraft. We have some talented people here and a great community that makes VC different. IMO a refresh of spawn would be beneficial to everyone that plays here. I call it a refresh because even how great our spawn is everything gets old. This also might reinvigerate our comunity.

I LOVE this idea. You are quite the brilliant thinking machine, Emu. I would love to see something like this happen- as it would be a totally different experience to new players on VC- Nothing they have ever seen before. It would also maybe reduce the amount of questions that we get when new people join. (i.e. can someone tp me, where can I build, so on and so forth). We should really put some of these fantastic ideas people have had lately into motion sooner than later! <3

Sounds like an interesting idea.  The maze can't be too complicated, but I think it is relatively easy to make it so that each rule question has 2 options, right or left...both go 5-10 blocks and turn so you cant see which one continues on. the wrong path has a sign on the wall when you turn the corner that informs them of the correct answer.  A person that really doesnt want to read can still just run right and left and brute force their way through but it would still help some people get the right answer.

With regards to the bed teleportation idea...if clicking a bed triggers a block update, you could connect a block update detector to a command block to make the bed trigger a teleportation command or something to that effect.

Actually come to think of it, I think the command blocks could be used throughout the maze.  At the end of each pathway going right or left is a button you click with what you think the answer is.  Get it right and you're teleported forward, get it wrong and you move back a step or two and have to repeat the questions.  This is basically exactly what we wanted to do with the maze long ago, but we have been provided with a simple solution to do it. :)

EDIT: Ninja'd by Bonzai!YellWink

As I said in-game, Tony, I REALLY like this idea, it just fits with our Lore so well.

With the maze, I mentioned briefly last night about portal signs.  In the Spawn Revamp thread, somewhere around here, it was discussed, and the idea of an actual "maze" would really only serve to frustrate users.  And in theory, users could run through it without ever reading a sign, or by missing many of them.

With portal signs, you could have a series of rooms to quiz the player on the rules.  Maybe have a short path with some info signs, and at the end, the question and four answers.  Gunnerling and I did a bit on it in the Spawn Revamp thread, here.  But have a room each for griefing, stealing, cheating, member respect, building guidelines, and "I will read the guides and not bug players about commands," and that should be plenty.  Right-click the correct answer: move to the next room.  Right-click the wrong answer: return to where the player first joined.

A few other points from that thread that I like:

  • Within this "newbie area," certain commands should be disabled.  Specifically /spawn and /kill, but there should be others.
  • At the very start, there should be an area of "welcome" and some very basic info (like who we are, what we're about, and the website links), including instructions on what to do if they are just here for spleefing (once it's fixed) or any other MC game, although playing those shouldn't bypass them eventually having to go through the area.
  • Establishing a Whitelist for the server, so that even when the player gets through all the newbie stuff, they cannot do anything.  And every 5 min or so, the link to the Rules will be broadcast to them, and they will be asked to /accept them, a formal declaration that they have read and understood our Rules.  Doing that (and possibly registering for the forums) would automatically Whitelist them.  And they'd be good to go.

Anyways, I love the idea, and i think it could really make a big difference in how new players perceive the server.  Let me know when help is needed!  I think a BIG part of this sort of thing is that it should showcase our best building efforts.  The more pleasing the place is to see, the more likely players will put up with it.Smile

Another use I just thought of for command blocks, is when they click the last button, it could send a command to move the user to the default user group.  This way they actually start out in a user group with no permissions, and get added to the default user group at the end.  This could even be a multi-tier process where the first user group has no permissions, cant even talk, then after the first button press they at least get access to talking, but do not have access to the ability to /spawn, /home, /suicide etc., then finally, once they complete the entire process, they have access to the current default user group.

Not as restrictive as a white list, but at least may deter some people with malicious intent from even bothering, and still does not require any staff input to get a person going

Good ideas all around, guys. The thing that we need to emphasize a lot on is how to use the portal ships, as that will make it a lot easier for people to get off of Vetropolis once there. One of the things I have had to do most as a player here has been to direct people off Vetropolis. Not that I have an issue with it, but having it be more clear from the beginning would work much better. Anyhow, I would be glad to help once we get some actual planning going.

I have awesome shoulders.

Incorporating a storyline into the newbie spawn is a great idea. I can really see that catching people's attention (especially the kind of people we're trying to attract). I'll have to find the other threads of newbie spawn discussion and consolidate links here so we can keep everything that's been said.

We've discussed ideas in the past as I've also seen the mineshaft isn't the best first impression players get. Now it's a matter of "can it be done".

I'm going to see if I can build a version of this in SP and I'll upload it when I'm done. We'll see if I have the time. :)

I had started to do this, but it turned out VERY messy.  The problem I had was that there is SO much information we can provide, and so my "sign mazes" became very huge, even before any sort of quiz area.

I had a "general info pavillion," a "website hedge maze," a "rule mountain," and I was working on a "guide cave" before I gave up.  The file no longer exists, though.

I REALLY think that any sort of Newbie Starting Area or Vetropolis Wayfinding System is going to require something like that SignLink mod I posted about a few months back.  Right-clicking on the sign will paste a clickable link into your chat box, which can be for the various pages on the website like the Rules, forums, and guides, as well as links in the Lore Wiki where we could have actual "You Are Here" maps so they can get around.

But let me know if I can help in any way.Smile

Yep, I'm going to try and consolidate it a bit more than my original plan, and force people to reference the site from time to time. We shouldn't have to spell out EVERYTHING in game. If they can access MC, they can access the interwebs, and as such, need to be able to read. :)

If only there was a mod that allowed us to record sound and have it play from in game triggered by redstone. Then we could have James Earl Jones tell the story instead of signs. :(

Lol Meat.  In regards to this it seems like some people are going out on their own to try to see if they can make an awesome new spawn.  Maybe have a competition, similarly to that of the train station?

Okay, I'm done with my newbie spawn world. What exactly am I supposed to upload for you guys to take a look at it? Forgive my ineptitude, I have no clue what file is for what.

I DO know how to find the folder minecraft/saves/newbie spawn but what files from that folder are necessary?

ALL files in that folder are necessary.  Just add the whole folder to a zip or rar archive, and upload it to a hosting site.  I use Mediafire, but there are others like Dropbox that work just as well if not better.  Then just post the link. :)
